Editorial Review: For no gentleman is this more true than Charles Morwellan, the eighth Earl of Meredith. Although he's seen the many successful unions of his Cynster connections, he has also watched his father's obsessions nearly destroy their family and fortune, a mistake Charles will not repeat. But as Lord Meredith he must marry, so he offers for Sarah, the daughter of his neighbors Lord and Lady Conningham. She's intelligent enough to run his social life, beautiful enough to grace his arm, and old enough to know the value of his offer. For most young ladies of the ton, the right marriage is the culmination of years of training, perfect deportment, and intricate plans that would impress a general. But as a lady of independent means with a life of her own, Sarah is unwilling to wed unless it is for unbounded love. But Charles always gets what he wants. He convinces Sarah to give him two weeks to win her; if he succeeds, they will marry immediately. And so begins an intense courtship. By day, Charles and Sarah are models of decorum indulging in innocuous walks, polite conversation, sedate waltzes. Each night they steal away to the lush, moonlit gardens, where sensual embraces turn to searing kisses, and much, much more. Both are swept away on a tide of passion and feeling neither can resist. And yet, after the wedding, despite nights of insatiable passion, Charles remains aloof, as if the near-sinful sweetness of their nights exists only in a dream. Sarah battles to prove that true love is a force that can't be contained, a gift worth fighting for, but it's only when she's engulfed in a web of increasingly dangerous incidents that Charles discovers how much he's willing to surrender to protect . . . the taste of innocence.

Rating: - Rerun of a rerun
The book itself isn't all that bad (the orphanage subplot with the villain and railroads is, in fact, better than those in most of Laurens' other novels). The main problem is that the hero, Charles Morwellen, 8th earl of Meredith, really has no adequate reason for his hang-ups (when he appeared previously in Gabriel's story, A Secret Love, he was a member of what was, as upper-class English families in romances go, a really pretty functional and mutually supportive group).
The heroine's ... Read More

I am a huge fan of Ms. Laurens but I have to say that I really really struggled with this one. During the first half of the book my constant thought was "how many more pages do I have to read?"
Charlie has decided its time to marry and decides upon Sarah, a neighbour and family friend, to be his wife. The problem is that Charlie does not want love and Sarah will only marry for love. Sarah decides that she will only consider his proposal if she has time to get to know him better and they ... Read More
Rating: - good escapist literature
This is one of many of this loose "series". It was enjoyable, although her books have a definite pattern and are somewhat predictable if you read many of them. Definitely better if you read them separated by a chunk of time and other books!
Rating: - Book Review
I thought the book was well written and I like that Ms Laurens includes the other members of the "Family" in her story but yet lets some of the Cynsters pop up on ocassion. Maybe they should "pop up" just a little more or maybe some of her future books should be various revisits of Devil, Scandal, Vane, Demon, Gabriel & Lucifer and how they are enjoying the married life! I have most of Ms Laurens books and as yet none have been diappointing.
Rating: - Cannot get into this book
After about an hour and a half, I decided I wasn't investing any more time in this book because, frankly, I just don't care what happens to the characters. I gave it 2 stars based on the improbable possibility that the book, further on, somehow got more interesting or (at least)moderately plausible and a bit less silly. I doubt that it will, but I'm not willing to wade through more nonsense to find out.
