Rating: - A totally useless textbook.
The book by Artin was the most useless math textbook I have ever used. His proofs are impossible to understand, the exercises are frequently useless (either trivial results or monstrously tedious), and for the difficulty of the text to understand, the rigor of the presentation is astoundingly low (i.e. proving everything with matrices). His proving most of his statements with verbal exposition is also annoying as it makes it impossible to reference results in the book when solving problems. Also ... Read More
Rating: - the best book for bright undergrads
To clarify the comments appearing here, this book was written a good while back for MIT sophomore math majors. That is a very elite group, and it was challenging to many of them. The quality of student preparation has continued to decline since that time with predictable reactions to this book.
Nowadays a book like Dummitt and Foote, which is dumbed down to the level of the average student of today, is actually more detailed and easier to read, even though aimed largely at grad students, ... Read More
Rating: - Awesome book, belongs on every mathematician's shelf
Wow, I love this book. After my first course on proof-writing, I took Algebra in my second year in college, and this is the book we used. There's certainly a lot to say about this one. Where to begin?
Okay, so this is roughly broken up into three sections: Group Theory (Ch. 1-6), Representation Theory (Ch. 7-9), and Rings, Modules, Fields/Galois Theory (Ch. 10-14). Artin really wants the student to enjoy math and have fun with it, I think. The standard intros to basic subjects are normally ... Read More
Rating: - Worst Math Book Ever
Okay. So I am currently in an introductory algebra class using Artin's book. Well, I wouldn't exactly say I'm using it. Rather, I'm using two other books, and then doing assigned problems from his book. If I could give negative stars, I would.
I have to disagree with some others who have reviewed - making a student who has never seen most of these theories 'fill in the blanks' is not a good way to go about it. Better books realize that most of the material is very abstract, especially for those students ... Read More
Rating: - Concrete Abstract Algebra
I think this book should be the new standard textbook for abstract algebra(although not a new book, lol).
As you know, Michael Artin is a son of Emil Artin.
Emil Artin's description of mathematics is dense, concise.
For example, his textbook about Galois theory is thinner than
PS3's manual(lol). Of course it is a virtue. I like acrobatics(lol).
I think he was not only a mathematician but also an ecologist.
In contrast, Michael Artin's description style needs much paper. ... Read More
