Editorial Review: This self-paced, auto-instructional book in two volumes has become a “classic” in the field of music. A wealth of clearly laid-out lessons and exercises provide learners with continual feedback and reinforcement as they work through the activities and assignments at their own pace. Chapter topics include a review of dominant chords and the dominant seventh, nondominant seventh chords, altered nonharmonic tones and secondary dominants, modulation to closely related keys, borrowed chords, augmented sixth chords, chromatic third-relation harmony, and modulation to foreign keys. For music studio teachers and students, and use in preparatory music programs.

Rating: - A proven and practical way to get the basics on harmony quickly
FOR SOME STRANGE REASON, AMAZON HAS THE REVIEWS FOR PARTS 1 & 2 LINKED.
I first used this book as a freshman music major at Michigan State University in 1972 and had its original author, Paul O. Harder as the lecture professor. He was a wonderful man, a fine teacher, and this text helped me get familiar with the rudiments and basic language of musical and harmonic grammar.
The way the text works is you turn to a page, cover up the column of answers, read the question ... Read More
Rating: - Just what I need for Theory Class
Arrived in time and in shape for Music Theory II - who hoo!!! On with voicings and tonalities....
Rating: - Not in "very good" condition like amazon suggested
The cover was bent, most pages had been written on, and the whole book was thoroughly worn. It was a complete ripoff even for the cheap price I bought it at. The actual material, however, is pretty useful after I erased or whited out all the written-in answers.
Rating: - This is not the book plus CD version.
The ISBN to the book/cd version for part 1/9ed is:
ISBN-10: 0130382086 | ISBN-13: 9780130382085
And for part II/9ed:
ISBN-10: 0130382078 | ISBN-13: 9780130382078
Those ISBN numbers come from the publisher (Pearson / Prentice Hall). Amazon carries both items, although it doesn't have photos, gives the same title to both items, and fails to mention which one is which part.
Be aware that the CDs cannot be bought separately from the books... so that you ... Read More
Rating: - Pretty good.
It's a good book for people who are learning for their first time, but I learned it in the context of an AP (advanced placement) Music Theory class. The first 7 or so chapters I already knew, as well as almost all of the first book (Basic Materials in Music Theory, also by Harder).
The picture at the top of the Amazon page is outdated, there is a new design for the cover.
However, there are several mistakes both in this book and the prerequisite book. The teacher's edition (actually ... Read More
