Editorial Review: The ancient order of the Knights Templar possessed untold wealth and absolute power over kings and popes . . . until the Inquisition, when they were wiped from the face of the earth, their hidden riches lost. But now two forces vying for the treasure have learned that it is not at all what they thought it was–and its true nature could change the modern world.Cotton Malone, one-time top operative for the U.S. Justice Department, is enjoying his quiet new life as an antiquarian book dealer in Copenhagen when an unexpected call to action reawakens his hair-trigger instincts–and plunges him back into the cloak-and-dagger world he thought he’d left behind. It begins with a violent robbery attempt on Cotton’s former supervisor, Stephanie Nelle, who’s far from home on a mission that has nothing to do with national security. Armed with vital clues to a series of centuries-old puzzles scattered across Europe, she means to crack a mystery that has tantalized scholars and fortune-hunters through the ages by finding the legendary cache of wealth and forbidden knowledge thought to have been lost forever when the order of the Knights Templar was exterminated in the fourteenth century. But she’s not alone. Competing for the historic prize–and desperate for the crucial information Stephanie possesses–is Raymond de Roquefort, a shadowy zealot with an army of assassins at his command. Welcome or not, Cotton seeks to even the odds in the perilous race. But the more he learns about the ancient conspiracy surrounding the Knights Templar, the more he realizes that even more than lives are at stake. At the end of a lethal game of conquest, rife with intrigue, treachery, and craven lust for power, lies a shattering discovery that could rock the civilized world–and, in the wrong hands, bring it to its knees. From the Hardcover edition.

Rating: - Pretty good if you like this kind of stuff
Most of the book is a pretty well crafted and readable story. If you like this genre (secret societies and such) you may well like this novel.
Parts of the book, especially some of the characters, really needed some development. I found the character of the spy boss Stephenie to be completely unbelievable. She just did things you would expect a competent spy boss not to do.
The main character, Cotton, is better defined and a more believable character.

Rating: - Makes Dan Brown Look Like a Genius
Dan Brown can be blamed for the sudden proliferation of books dealing with quests, historians, and the search for treasure, knowledge and power. The problem is that as much as I am loathe to admit it, Brown is a much better writer than most of the people putting out similar books.
Berry's outing is about as bad as it gets. He tells the story of the Templars, who have been driven into hiding and have long since vanished from the world. The Templars are in search of the Great Devise, ... Read More
Rating: - As an avid reader for 14 years...
I consider it a mark of honor to finish every book I pick up. The only two I can recall putting down without finishing (there have been a few more, but out of thousands read, I can't remember them all) have been Battlefield Earth and this one. Just too many leaps and too little plausibility. Dan Brown created a pseudo-intellectual monster with this sub-genre. Maybe it's time for it to quietly die.
Rating: - A great read
This book is a real page-turner and a great beach read. It served as a great distraction during Passover break. It was written for entertainment, not to be taken as a source of history. People get bent out of shape in order to sound smart. I would like to see critics do better.
Rating: - Religious Sect History
A great read for anyone interested in the true history of the Templars, following the fantastical references in books such as the DaVinci Code. This fills in much of the historical background and allusions.
