Editorial Review: This startling, sensual, hypnotically compelling novel tells a story of adventure, sexual enthrallment, and a love so powerful that it unhinges a man's life. In 1861 French silkworm merchant Hervé Joncour is compelled to travel to Japan, where, in the court of an enigmatic nobleman, he meets a woman. They do not touch; they do not even speak. And he cannot read the note she sends him until he has returned to his country. But in the moment he does, Joncour is possessed. The same spell will envelop anyone who reads Silk, a work that has the compression of a fable, the evocative detail of the greatest historical fiction, and the devastating erotic force of a dream.

Rating: - let's calm down
this novella's a breezy, engaging read, but it's principally a sketch, and insufficiently developed to justify, in my view, the accolades it's getting from most reviewers. the story seems to me to exploit, and not so originally, a very basic, primitive fantasy. there's a somewhat neat twist towards the end, but still, it's pretty much a fluff piece, as i read it. this man can write, no question, but this is a light, not deep, book, whose impact dissipates quickly.

This tale is not for the reader who needs books to think for them. This book is about understanding: Understanding life, understanding love, and understand self.
Some readers will not see the multiple symbols placed before them when they read it. A bird is a bird, but not in this book.
Free expressions are painted before the reader - freedom, choice, and sacrifice.
The style is beautiful to read in this short novel with a heart-breaking ending.

Rating: - Silk spins a soft cocoon of sensual surreptitiousness.
This little novella magically flows with beautifully poetic imagery woven into a stunning love story that seduces you from the beginning.
The year is 1861 and the booming silk trade in Europe has hit a wall.... disease has spread in the eggs of the silkworms throughout the continent and continues it's reach into the Middle East and beyond.
Japan remains unaffected by the silkworm epidemic and is rumored to possess the finest silk available.

Rating: - Beautifully Written
A beautifully written book giving readers a peek into another time, another world, an obsession, a love.
Rating: - Intriguiging Writing
It has all of the things I like about a novel--it has information, entertainment, and originality. And it has brevity to boot. (Methinks Micheal Faber should perchance learn Italian and sit at Barrico's feet for a while--a 1,000 pages do not a good book make). It's so small that it barely rates the term novella, and along with Sky Burial, these two books are perfect travel companions, a pair of pleasurable books ideal for that short flight or car trip that only last a few hours.
And that's ... Read More
