Editorial Review: The Trickster's gifts come with a price. A long time ago he gave a new animal to our ancestors, and changed the world... Out of Breath is barely a man when he first dreams of a powerful white animal- a shining giant that runs unseen through the desert as quickly and easi;y as water runs through his fingers. His people tell Out of Breath that visions are suspect, and in any case properly had by old men, not by young ones. But he is driven and relentless, and must leave to search the desert himself. When he returns, he is leading a beast who's like no one has ever seen before-a tall, bony creature who says its name is Horse. The people of Red Earth City are afraid of it-all except the beautiful, willful Wants the Moon, who first thinks of riding on its back. Together, Out of Breath and Wants the Moon will prove what the gift of Horse may mean to their people and to the Buffalo Hunters of the Grass. As yet, only Coyote the Trickster wishes that he could undo the danger that has ridden in unwanted and unseen on Horse's sleek back...The Trickster's gifts come with a price. A long time ago he gave a new animal to our ancestors, and changed the world...

Rating: - Ok, ...well it was a good try....
I'm not sure exactly how to start this review. At first, the book had me confused. As I turned the pages I will admit that even though it was a slow starter, it turned out to be okay. I think as far as the characters go the personalities needed something. They all molded together instead of each having a life of its own. I think books even though need an ending that will surprise the reader it also needs an ending that will leave the reader fulfilled and pleased. Some stories are so sad that ... Read More
Rating: - This book was so bad it was painfull!
I didn't think it was possible to write a book in which every character is absolutely lifeless!
Rating: - When the Horses Came
A good book - added to my collection.
Rating: - An enchanting book
The author has managed to weave a tale of magical realism with language that is spare and uncluttered. Her characters are astutely drawn, with flaws and contradictions--but also courage and tenderness--that make them believable and likable. The setting and time are well rendered, and the premise of the story--how Native Americans first came to use horses--is an intriguing one.
Rating: - Amanda Cockrell delivers a spell-binding read
This is a great book for anybody who has ever gone in search of their dreams. Out of Breath's quest for Horse works on so many levels. I found myself up late at night turning pages, and wondering about my own life quests. Kudos to Cockrell for writing a story full of rich prehistory details and much wisdom.
