What a wonderful surprise this book was to me. I bought it to have enough to get free shipping. And voila the surprise of a lifetime. This book is funny and sad in equal measures. I loved the format....I usually don't like this form of writing, but this worked wonderfully well. I read the book in one day, couldn't put it down, except to watch some of the Olympics LOL.
The prose was flowing and did not leave me stranded at any point in the book. The characters were wonderfully thought out and ... Read More

This book is full of both delightful whimsy and great courage. Although I felt a bit like a voyeur reading other people's mail, it was an enthralling tale, and I was sad to see it end. I had always been aware of the fact that the channel islands were occupied, however this story gives that knowledge a reality. Throughout the book, both in the memories of some of the characters, and in the current events of the tale, one sees that life sometimes takes some odd turns, and yet it goes on.

One of the best novels I have "read" (listened to) in years. The audiobook is beautifully read by five different narrators. I did not want it to end. This book is that rare gem; not too short, but not too long, no explicit sex, no offensive language, clever plot, good romance, happy ending. It sounds so simple, and I don't know why it's rare, but it is. I don't consider myself to be old-fashioned, but many of the prevailing flaws of literature jar me. I would like some literary forum to set up a kind of book escape travel agency. I would tell them: I've been to Dickens, don't try and sell me a shabby fixer-upper with no view. Anyway, this book ... After the first few pages I wondered if this was a book for me. Once into it, tho', I found myself ignoring some of my "chores" and opting instead to read. It was such an interesting book in terms of history, character development and style. I find I am recommending this to all my friends and family. I thoroughly enjoyed it. I do not give many books a 5 star rating.
