The worms are supplied by his opponent, whose motto is "The bigger and juicier, the better!" If you are considering reading this book with a first grader, and have a queasy stomach, make sure you keep the child's personality in mind. While it was the first whole book with chapters that my son sat through happily, he did, in fact, eat a worm when we were finished. Raw. (I wouldn't cook it.)
