Rating: - Tigana is pretty great
Anyway, on to Tigana! The novel has a beautifully crafted setting: The Palm, which is a land of multiple provinces in a state of intense political tension finely balanced between two powerful magicians and dictators. The reader's point of view is provided by Devin d'Asoli, a teenaged singer who discovers some shocking information about himself and who finds himself swept up in the most important historical events of his time. The significance of the title of the novel is the name of a country whose ... Read More
Rating: - A classic in its own right
One of my all-time favorites. The author weaves a complex, multi-layered tale that involves characters from all backgrounds--including a bard/tenor. Magic is strong, but you never get the feeling that it's over-the-top. The author's writing style is well constructed, but takes a few pages to get used to. Two powerful wizard-kings struggle for power--one of whom is responsible for a tragic act that comes back to haunt him. Kay is a master at driving the story to its dramatic conclusion, which feels ... Read More
Rating: - overrated by a mile
Tigana is a wordy, boring, rambling book that goes nowhere. If you want to read an outstanding fantasy book(s), read any of the EARTHSEA series by Ursula K. LeGuin. She is the master.
Rating: - An epic in one volume!
I must admit searching for someone new to read is a difficult thing, especially if you're used to a certain authors writing style. After reading the reviews of this book, I decided to give it a go. The first time I tried to start this book (after reading David Gemmell, my favorite author), I thought this novel slow, overwritten, and bland. I put it down. Months later after reading George Martin's Game of Thrones, I decided to try again with Tigana. I don't know what happened but I read through ... Read More
Rating: - A classic. One of the finest fantasies ever written.
Tigana is an edgy fantasy with a complex, twisting plot. Kay's prose is exquisite, his characters fleshed out and real. This book explores pain and loss, love and joy, power and weakness, all woven together in a tale that demands to be read and reread. This one is a keeper.
