Editorial Review: Pride and Prejudice lives on, (USA Today) a fun and zany time warp, (New York Daily News) history textbook meets Bridget Jones (Marie Claire): Readers and reviewers alike praise Lauren Willigs bestselling Pink Carnation series for its passion, adventure, and tantalizing stories of flower- named spies during the Napoleonic wars. Lauren Willig continues the exciting Pink Carnation series with her fourth novel, The Seduction of the Crimson Rose, featuring Lord Vaughn, the delightfully devilish spy from The Masque of the Black Tulip, and Mary Alsworthy, the raven-haired beauty whose sister accidentally stole her suitor in The Deception of the Emerald Ring. Determined to secure another London season without assistance from her new brother-in-law, Mary accepts a secret assignment from Lord Vaughn on behalf of the Pink Carnation: to infiltrate the ranks of the dreaded French spy, the Black Tulip, before he and his master can stage their planned invasion of England. Every spy has a weakness, and for the Black Tulip that weakness is black-haired womenhis petals of the Tulip. A natural at the art of seduction, Mary easily catches the attention of the French spy, but Lord Vaughn never anticipates that his own heart will be caught as well. Fighting their growing attraction, impediments from their past, and, of course, the French, Mary and Vaughn find themselves lost in the shadows of a treacherous garden of lies. As our modern-day heroine, Eloise Kelly, digs deeper into Englands Napoleonic- era espionage, she becomes even more entwined with Colin Selwick, the descendant of her spy subjects.

Rating: - Crimson Rose
I've always enjoyed the Pink Carnation series; mainly for the ridiculous love stories and quasi-historicalness. This wasn't my favorite one, but it wasn't bad. Unlike the previous stories, this main character isn't all sugary-nice perfection, and I liked that about her. However, I didn't feel like her 'romance' with the leading man Vaughn was very heartfelt or convincing. For example, they have a passionate moment while he's in bed, pale and sickly from a bullet wound. Uh huh. I was also highly ... Read More
Rating: - So very dissapointing- and I LOVED her 3 other books-
I was SO dissapointed with this 4th book of hers. I waited 6 months to get it. There is too much description of things like wall paper and things in the house. Not enough action of the spy nature at all. And for you ladies that love the big "finale" sex scene- well there is none to be had. Also, I found the book very, very, slow for the first third of the way through. In fact, I wondered if the same person had written it. Ms. Willig,if you are reading this,I really don't know what you are doing as a second ... Read More
Rating: - Intriguing Series Continues
This 4th book in the series starting with THE SECRET HISTORY OF THE PINK CARNATION continues the mystery and fun of the earlier books. I really like the way Lauren Willig alternates between her modern day researcher, Eloise Kelly and the British spies from the era of Napoleon, where Eloise is working to uncover the identity of spy known as The Black Tulip. I wish Willig would spend a little more time developing the relationship between Eloise Kelly and her love-interest, Colin Selwick, but I look forward ... Read More
Rating: - A little disappointed, but still can't wait for the next one!
Although still up there with some of the more decent books I have read, I do not feel that this installment in Ms. Willig's Pink Carnation "series" was really up to par with the first three novels. I felt as if the whole thing was rushed, there was severe lack of character development with Mary and Vaughn, and even beyond that...I did not feel as if these two really felt for each other the way the couples in the other installments did. That could have been the conspicuous absence of the naughty romance scene ... Read More
Rating: - Most interesting leads yet
From reading other reviews, it seems that a lot of people are disappointed with the leads, Mary and Vaughn, because they aren't immediately sympathetic, in that they don't value romantic, sentimental expression over everything else. As Willig herself notes, these characters draw instead on a different tradition of expression-- that of wit. The exchanges between Vaugn and Mary are sharp and sparkling. Rather than seduce each other by admiring their physical qualities, or their open expression, they seduce each ... Read More
