Editorial Review: When Eric Lavender meets the attorney Colleen O'Brien Golden, his position as one of Manhattan's chic psychotherapists and most eligible bachelors suddenly loses its appeal. The sexy, stylish Colleen lures him to live with her and her young daughter in the exclusive suburb of Scarsdale. To his amazement, Eric is besotted and soon settles into the unexpected bliss of marriage and domesticity with their new baby and his loving stepdaughter. He even becomes a local hero when the police turn to him for help in resolving a hostage crisis. But Eric's transformation comes to an abrupt halt when the police knock on his door again -- this time with handcuffs. He and Colleen are caught up in an explosive conflict of interest involving their clients. When Eric discovers that Colleen has gone to extreme lengths to conceal her secret past, she retaliates with horrendous charges against him. Eric must uncover the truth before his children, his career, and his freedom are taken from him forever. As she did in her bestseller Almost, Elizabeth Benedict navigates the turbulent waters of love, law, psychology, and ethics with biting wit and penetrating insight. The Practice of Deceit is a razor-sharp novel of marriage -- and divorce -- gone awry.

Rating: - Your wife isn't who you think she is - and she wants you out of the picture!
Great quick read. A beautiful lawyer, a gullible husband and a marriage based on her lies and connivance. What's not to love? The book starts out strong and keeps you hanging on for more.
Rating: - LOVED this book!!
This is simply a great book - so good that I've already gone to the library to get another Benedict book. I found it particularly interesting to read about the sociopathetic behavior of the wife in this book - she was fascinating. The whole book was just a great interaction of man and wife, love and hate, truth and deceit. One of my friends is reading it now - on my recommendation - and really likes the book as well. Borrow it, buy it - read it!!
Rating: - Drawing a Bead on the Professional Class
Elizabeth Benedict is one savvy observer of upper middle class contemporary life. She writes about the early 21st century the way Judith Rossner and Susan Isaacs wrote about the 1970s and 80s. I couldn't put this book down, not just because the plot pulls you forward, but because the characters-- from the two little girls to their Philippina nanny to psychotherapist Eric Lavender, his befuddled clients, and his lesbian surgeon sister Pru-- are drawn so finely.
It's a great send-up ... Read More
Rating: - Page-turner -- Psychological Thriller
An exciting page-turner disguised as women's fiction. Psychotherapist Eric Lavender thinks his practice of bored Scarsdale housewives and personal life including two small children and a workaholic wife is boring, yet comfortable. Then his world falls apart as he's arrested for a horrific crime he didn't commit -- arreested at the hands of his once-devoted wife. As he digs deeper beneath her polished surface, everything Eric once held sacred begins to crumble.
