Editorial Review:She dreams of a quiet life with her beloved George, but war looms...Though still a young woman, Martha Custis is a widow. But she is not without means and has no desire to remarry. Not, that is, until a striking war hero steps into her life and she realizes she is ready to love again. Yet she wonders whether this man, accustomed to courageous military exploits, can settle down to a simple life of farming and being a father to her children.Even as she longs for domestic bliss, Martha soon realizes she will have to risk everything dear to her and find the courage to get behind a dream much larger than her own.Known for moving first-person novels of Nannerl Mozart and Jane Austen, Nancy Moser now brings to life the loves and trials of the First First Lady of the United States.

Rating: - Slow moving
I thought the book was slow moving and not as good as many others I have read. Would probably not recommend this book to my friends.

What is life worth if you don't get down and dirty? Well, as far as Essie is concerned, life that is not lived is not life at all. She is not content to sit and watch the men do the hard work, or ride bicycles, catch snakes, go fishing or own oil companies. She sets it clear from the start that she is a woman who does not have the need to fit into the social standards of that day. "Deep in the Heart of Trouble" is a historical ... Read More
Rating: - Deep in the heart of boredom!!
I read this book based on the online reviews I saw for it, and though, hey, as the song says '50 million Elvis fans can't be wrong'....in this case Deanne Gist fans...but boy was I wrong.
I really liked the charachter of Essie. Spunky, defying traditions, independant and fun...she seemed like someone I'd like to meet. The other charachters in the book were all cartoons in a live-action movie. I had a hard time doing more than liking Tony, whose motivations seemed pure and good, but ... Read More
Rating: - Gist continues to be enjoyable
This was a good conclusion to Courting Trouble. Although, I did find myself 1/2 way through the book feeling it hit a lull...Part of me wanted Adam to come back in this book a changed man and fight for Essie...but I'm not disappointed by the new love that enters Essie's life. While I still think Bride Most Begrudging is her best...DITHOT is still a very entertaining read.
Rating: - Deep in the Heart of Trouble
Deeanne Gist has done it again in "Deep in the Heart of Trouble." Please read "Courting Trouble" first to get a handle on the main character Essie, who is also the main character in this story. You'll be taken in from the first page 'til the last! Colorful and full of imagery.
