Editorial Review: Belimai Sykes is many things: a Prodigal, the descendant of ancient demons, a creature of dark temptations and rare powers. He is also a man with a brutal past and a dangerous addiction. And Belimai Sykes is the only man Captain William Harper can turn to when faced with a series of grisly murders. But Mr. Sykes does not work for free and the price of Belimai's company will cost Captain Harper far more than his reputation. From the ornate mansions of noblemen, where vivisection and sorcery are hidden beneath a veneer of gold, to the steaming slums of Hells Below, Captain Harper must fight for justice and for his life. His enemies are many and his only ally is a devil he knows too well.

Rating: - Not what I expected
Alright, this book is sold as gay romance, but really the relationship between the two characters seems to be almost background static. I enjoyed the actual story, so I wasn't bored; however, I agree with another reviewer who said that the novel comes far too close to crossing into "gratuitous prose." My initial attraction to this novel was, in fact, the language but there really should be a limit to how many similies and metaphors are stuck in a single book. I was close to throwing it against the ... Read More
Rating: - Better than I expected
The summary on the back of the book is misleading. Better summaries have already been written in other reviews, but in short, this is more of an AU historical action/adventure with a smattering of romance. Yes, it's hot, but the focus is not on erotic sex, but on characterizations. Very well written. I'm hoping for more from this author, possibly a sequel :)
Rating: - Fascinating read, great characters, great writing!
Wicked Gentlemen is a different sort of fantasy than I'm used to. It is told in two sections, each separate stories in chronological order and each in the mind of a different character. Together they tell a story of forbidden love on two levels--doubly forbidden, if you will--of corruption, bigotry, fear, and religion.
Belimai Sykes is a descendant of ancient demons--or Prodigal. Sykes has a history with the Inquisition, a religious movement that uses any force necessary to get what it ... Read More
Rating: - Review of Wicked Gentlemen
My first impression after reading this book is there must be more of the adventures of Belimai Sykes and his lover Captain William Harper. Just inside the front cover, Hale includes two maps of the world of Wicked Gentlemen; one depicting the layout of Crowncross, the Holy Capitol; and Hopetown, also called Hell's Below. Both are elaborate and descriptive with Hopetown having the most detail, but many of the features of the maps do not figure into the novel, which is actually two short stories, the ... Read More
Rating: - Original Slash
This book was recommended to me by Amazon. They claimed it would go well with 'Luck in the Shadows' by Lynn Flewelling. And they were right - this book provided me with quite a few hours of very satisfactory reading. Well written, original, captivating, and (what was most important for me) - strangely alive.
However, those who object to slash probably should avoid this book.
