Rating: - This is a very special film
I first encountered "Silent Night, Lonely Night" as an adolescent - some inspired producer from WGN would put this made-for-TV movie in the prime time slot for Christmas Day. The thought of bearing one's soul completely, even for just one night, struck a chord in me. My discovery of this movie led to further discoveries of Robert Anderson's work - and I think that this story, more than any other of Anderson's works that I've encountered, shows that Anderson is truly "the playwright of loneliness" ... Rating: - A bittersweet brief encounter
This poignant, touching film has lingered in my memory over the decades. Made during a time when TV was open to quiet, offbeat, even artistic filmmaking, it's a deeply human & tender story. Lloyd Bridges & Shirley Jones are superb as two decent, lonely people who meet by chance during the Christmas season, yearning for just a few moments of happiness & joy. Yet circumstances & their own innate strength of character makes anything more lasting impossible. Jeff Bridges, in one of his earliest ... Read More
Rating: - A Special Holiday Movie
Lloyd Bridges and Shirley Jones are wonderful as two strangers who meet while staying at a country inn at Christmastime. Lloyd Bridges is in town to visit his wife who is in a mental hospital; Shirley is there to pick up her son from his private school and to decide if she wants to try and reconcile with her cheating husband who is in London. As Lloyd and Shirley's friendship turns to passion and love, they slowly reveal the sad secrets they've been holding inside.
Scenes in the village and snowy countryside ... Read More
Rating: - Silent Night, Lonely Night
This is one of the best Christmas movies I have ever seen. Since first watching it on television, I have seen it every Christmas season. The styles certainly date it, but the story is heart-warming and bittersweet. Two strangers meet in a small New England town just before Christmas and find friendship, comfort and love when they need it most.
Rating: - comfort from a stranger
Two proper strangers meet unexpectedly in a small hotel and are surprised to find themselves attracted to each other as they each are already married. Neither one knowing anyone else in town, they spend an afternoon together and when they retire to their own rooms, find that despair and lonliness drive them back into each others arms. The skillful way that the couple was drawn to each other and then comforted, was very enjoyable. I looked for the replaying of this TV movie every year after, Excellent!
