Editorial Review: From the very first shot (a tranquil beachside moment rendered hilariously off-kilter), this wholly wonderful film about a turbulent year in the life of two teenage sisters is a stunningly fresh--if somewhat insubstantial--delight. Originating from what one suspects is a largely autobiographical script, director Diane Kurys's debut film rings true on nearly every level (although it is somewhat jarring that a few of the eighth graders on display here appear to be pushing 25). A refreshingly nonidealized, endearingly raunchy film that deserves to be grouped with Truffaut's The 400 Blows and A Christmas Story as one of the best-ever movies about growing up, and an ideal starter film for viewers hesitant about international cinema. In French with English subtitles. --Andrew Wright

Rating: - Charming and Hopeful
Sort of a lighter, more contemporay companion piece to The 400 Blows; Peppermint Soda observes various traumas and triumphs in the lives of some middle class French schoolgirls as the culture gradually sheds its frigid post-war austerity and moves into the colorful, turbulent 60s. Everything adolescent is covered from cruel teachers and self-absorbed divorced parents to first love and budding political idealism.
Rating: - FRENCH CHARMER
Kury's affecting directoral debut is a semi-autobiographical tale of two teenaged sisters set in 1963 Paris. Seen through the eyes of the 13-year-old Anne, who lives with 15 year-old sister Frederique and their divorced mother, this is the year of first loves, strict teachers, dreaded family vacations, and a general awareness of growing up. Sweet look at adolescence and all it's embarrassing tribulations. French with English subtitles.
Rating: - A delightful French femme coming-of-age movie
Diane Kurys's wonderful Peppermint Soda is a delicious peek inside the life of 8th-grader Anne, her older sister Frederique, and her struggling single mom. Laced with humor and insights, the film recounts an "ordinary" year in a young girl's life. Easy French with English subtitles, and a terrific range of background music.
