Notorious as the first John Wayne film that does the unthinkable--subject Wayne's character to a nasty fate after only a short time--the 1972 Cowboys isn't much more interesting beyond that. The story finds Wayne playing a rancher who takes 11 boys on a cattle drive. They run into a nut case (Bruce Dern) who deprives the kids of their leader, and the rest of the film is a tale of revenge. Mark Rydell (Cinderella Liberty) directs an unexciting production, although performances by some of the younger actors such as A. Martinez and Robert Carradine are memorable. --Tom Keogh

Rating: out of 5 stars - First time viewing of this old time movie
Sad but true never saw this cool old time movie, with one of my favorite cowboys! Glad that I had the opportunity to see it now. It's currently one of my favorites!

Rating: out of 5 stars - ~~GREAT WESTERN~~
Hi All.....
This movie is excellent if you like westerns or just John Wayne...I have seen this one many, many times over. Bruce Dern is of course a great bad guy!!!

A task he is not too found of, but that he takes head on. But, I guess that is the main point of the movie...what would it take to teach school boys how to handle a man's job. According to this movie, a whole lot of man sized training. Second, John Wayne dies in the movie, and pretty early by Wetern standards. I was a little surprised ... Read More

Rating: out of 5 stars - Classic
Purchased for my husband, but I am a fan a well. Little to be said other than it is the best of John Wayne's movies. Timeless. Highly recommend.

Rating: out of 5 stars - westernidyll
I have only a few comments. No great fan of John Wayne, or the politics of his times, or any attempt to support or condone violence, I find this film a masterpiece. It is a sheer cinematic treasure of great performances, Wayne's included. The cowboys were perfectly chosen. The cinematography, music, script, all are superb. This film will always be a classic.
