In Ayacucho, Peru at the beginning of Holy week in 2000, public prosecutor Felix Chacaltana Saldívar, a lonesome, scared, poetry loving man set in his old traditions, is forced to face the investigation of a horrible murder. The crime is the beginning of a series of mysterious deaths, and through his investigation, the public prosecutor does not discard the responsibility of the terrorist organization Sendereo Luminoso. Little by little, he will have to become familiar with the irregular methods of the police and the Peruvian army, and he soon becomes an undesirable man to all, and a stranger to itself. Abril rojo is a novel about Peru, its history, its symbols, "the orgy of corruption that inundates the country ", and about the war between the army and the Sendero Luminoso during Fujimoris presidency. This was a war in which Peru was lost, and its population, left in its misery, suffered without understanding. The story develops into a multifaceted plot at an excellent pace where we witness twenty years of brutal violence. El fiscal Félix Chalcatana se ve envuelto en la investigación del primero de una serie de sanguinarios asesinatos. Al ritmo de un intenso thriller, el fiscal va perdiendo la poca inocencia que le quedaba al percatarse de los horrores que puede cometer el ejército y la policía de su país. A lo largo de su investigación, Félix sostiene conversaciones con testigos y elementos clave que, tras haber hablado con él, mueren torturados y asesinados. Hacia el final de la historia la obra presenta dos giros de tuerca que convierten en inocente y víctima a quien la trama apuntaba como culpable y desenmascaran una verdad todavía más perversa con la confesión del Comandante Carrión.

I am not the typical reader... in fact I wasn't a reader at all until I discovered Roncagliolo... Firstly I read "La Cuarta Espada" in about 1 week.. (record for me) and since I like Santiago's syle decided to get into Abril rojo... I have to say that it is a very good and catching book.. I beat my record and finish it in 5 days... Not bad for my first 2 books read after school more than 10 years ago...
I'm buying PUDOR now...

A murder mistery in an Andean city is the frame to get the reader into the complex social diversity of Peru. Through this fascinanting story the reader is exposed to the feelings, wounds, and pain left by years of violence in Peru. Great read, chapters are ingeniously opened with paragraphs intentionally full of misspelled words written as they may sound in the local use of the spanish, presented as believable sections of official documents or letters written by the characters. Rating: - A la altura de los mejores, en cualquier idioma
"Abril rojo" de Santiago Roncagliolo no solo esta a la altura de thrillers hispanos de edicion reciente como "La sombra del viento" (Carlos Ruiz-Zafon) y "La reina del sur" (Arturo Perez-Reverte), sino que supera a muchos, en castellano o no, con su agilidad argumental y complejidad protagonica.
Lo va a atrapar desde su comienzo. Lo obligara a olvidarse de su entorno. Hara que se entregue del todo a un libro que, en su genero, tiene las de convertirse en un hito literario.
