Editorial Review: Soft Machine was the jazziest of England's progressive rock bands of the late-'60s, and this 1970 collection album was its expansive masterpiece. It was also one of the hippie era's ultimate jam records, with four songs on its two records. The Soft Machine that opened for Jimi Hendrix's 1968 tour was a trio, but Third brought in five more pieces, including horns and a violin. Keyboardist Mike Ratledge's nicely arranged "Slightly All the Time" featured strong horn lines and terrific percussion from drummer Robert Wyatt. Wyatt's wry way with a vocal and lyrics animate the more rock- like "Moon in June." (Wyatt, who later became paralyzed below the waist in an accident, still releases well-regarded singer-songwriter records.) One suspects that this music was cooked up under the spell of trumpeter Miles Davis' seminal 1969 albums, In a Silent Way and Bitches Brew. The vital result was a record that speaks of its time, but that's also aged remarkably well. --John Milward

My exposure to Soft Machine consisted of 1 track from a sampler L.P. purchased back in the late 60's.
With that as a disclaimer. I must say that when I discovered them in the late 80's, I was more than just a little impressed. 1 & 2 were amazing works, but "Third" was Stunningly good. Originally released as a 2 L.P. set with 1 track per side, it was an ambitious project. Bridging the gaps between rock, jazz and avant gard psychedelia.
Track 1 "Facelift" is an incredible live performance. ... Read More

Okay, going into the Soft Machine album "Third", I had no prior experience with the band. Listening to this album for the first time... I think I finally flipped my lid! This is either some of the most exciting and complex music I've ever heard, or the most messed up thing on the planet. I can't decide which!
The disc consists of only four songs, each one nearly 20 minutes in length, all conveniently put onto a single disc to avoid all those double-disc problems that many of us face in our ... Read More

track one is interesting but the rest of the tracks are great a very progressive band for their time a cd worth having.
Rating: - somebody remaster this please!
this is an incredible album, with incredibly bad sound quality on cd. it may be the worst cd sound of a great album out there. but, alas, it is all that is available on cd, & this is a weirdly fantastic album of progressive jazz rock fusion noise & more. i love this album. when i take it out to play i fondle it in ways that are not natural. please some record industry something-or-other out there, remaster this thing so that the sound quality matches the great freaky music that expodes into being when ... Third is not inspiring at all: it rather invites to give up; it is that perfect. One of the very few of its kind, Third is first of all nonopaque: it does not block the sight at what they want to show. Rather than being a landscape or a mirror, Third is offering an opening allowing the interlocutor to see and hear instead of only looking or listening. Third defies any cultural (de)formation in favor of an affective situation to such an extent that the reception is purified of any reflex prejudice.
