Rating: - bought it for the cool cover and "don't fear the reaper"
This was my first Blue Oyster Cult CD. I bought it 'cause of the cool Grim Reaper album cover art and because it had "don't fear the reaper" on it. I had no idea it was recorded live when I bought it, and might have gone with a greatist hits package if I had known. I'm glad I didn't though, because I LOVE it. While I think the song "R U ready to rock" is so dorky it's hilarious, I also think it's the perfect album opener. This is just a fun, live rock record that one shouldn't take too seriously. ... Rating: - BOC and the death of the overblown live album.
When this album came out, the live albums that were being released were overlong, unnecessary, and in some cases, inane (usually released to fulfill contractual obligations). So, when I purchased this album as a fan of BOC (after getting hooked a few years earlier with Secret Treaties), I was hoping it would be trancend those other albums. It does. Essential tracks, one concert, and one mood. Just a great collection to highlight the high flying rock sound of the group. All of the musicianship of the ... Read More
Rating: - HOW ENCHANTING!
I am astounded by the mixed reviews. Some like it while others find it to be somewhat weak. I never get tired of this album. Many say that R U Ready 2 Rock is the clunker of the album. I think it completely rocks. Great way to open a BOC concert. Astronomy is essential in this live version. The only thing I wish for this album is that the symbols were more audible in the break on (Don't Fear) The Reaper. I love the cover tunes. I am not a fan of covers but in concert I do enjoy them. Rating: - Hypnotic and beautiful.
Blue Oyster Cult had very few songs which broke into the mainstream, but they define the early Goth/Heavy Metal niche perfectly and sold out every arena in the world back in their prime years in the 70's and 80's. When I watch Spinal Tap, it's BOC they have right in the cross-hairs. They're easy to goof on with their cosmic BS and oblique, poetic lyrics, but BOC is authentic. Without any radio play they've become a 2nd-tier band over time, but they're the real deal.
These guys are a poor man's ... Read More
Rating: - Enchanting Guitar Bliss
When you think of live rock albums usually you think of sloppier instrument play with over-indulgent solos. Especially if you've heard the studio versions of the songs. But I am not lying with this album: ITS WORTH IT. If you like undefinable rock atmosphere then this album is for you. It starts off with a warm up in R U Ready to Rock, jumps into E.T.I., then launches you unexpectedly into a dreamcasting version of Astronomy which in my opinion destroys the studio version. They serve up Kick Out the Jams followed ... Read More
