Average Rating: out of 5 stars

Rating: out of 5 stars - Excellent!! Must-have Jean-Luc!! Almost worth 5 stars!
I put off rating this CD, as well as its follow-up Mystical Adventures for a long time...because they are both excellent albums, both worth about 4.8 stars, but they fall short of Ponty's earlier 5-star albums. They lack the depth of inspiration of a few of his previous works. That is NOT to imply there is no inspiration here! As my title states: this is an excellent, must-have JLP album! It just lacks the total depth, raw power and beauty of Cosmic M., Enigmatic O. and Imaginary V. and even ... Read More

Rating: out of 5 stars - This could use a remastering
This cd would be much more enjoyable if it got a superb remastering job. I like every song a lot, except, "Forms of Life" which is a too repetitive track without any guitars or drums. I can't believe that it made it on the best of collection. This doesn't have that crisp high end that I like to hear. The drums have that dry non-ambient sound without the high crisp cymbals. They've remastered much of the Jean-Luc Ponty catalog and it's a shame they haven't got around to doing this one, thus, I've removed ... Read More

Rating: out of 5 stars - A VERY good CD...
What first attracted me to this CD is the list of stellar musicians playing on this album: Ponty on elec. violin, Randy Jackson on bass (American Idol!), Mark Chraney on drums (of Jethro Tull fame)...
Once I got it, I found the album istantly likable. Unlike a lot of jazz albums it doesn't take long for the music to sink in.

Like most Ponty albums, Jean-luc is the only one who gets improv time, which isn't too bad this time around because his improv happens to be so good. At times its ... Read More

Rating: out of 5 stars - I had forgotten this was missing in my life....
Civilized Evil is one of my absolute favorite albums ever. I first bought the cassette, then the album and the disc. I first heard this on a college station in Colorado in the 80's. Listening in a dark, candlelit atmosphere, Once Upon a Blue Planet never fails to pull emotion. I love every track of this unique disc. JLP at his best.

Rating: out of 5 stars - Randy Jackson to the plate!
This is the first Ponty album Randy Jackson (American Idol judge) played on after Ralphe Armstrong quit the band. He did a great job if not better than Ralphe did! The music went into a more funky groove on this album. Another era was beginning.
