Rating: out of 5 stars - Another good offering from Testament ... but certainly not their best
First, the production was pretty bad (as it was on most early Testament albums, but this was thhe worst), meaning it's hard to feel the energy of the songs.

Second, this was their first album that was not solid from start to finish. You could play The Legacy, The New Order, or Practice What You Preach from start to finish and there was not a weak song or filler on the album, where Souls of Black is plagued by fillers.

Souls of Black, Face In The Sky and The Legacy are all ... Read More

Rating: out of 5 stars - the pressure of touring
Souls of Black was doomed.Topping Practice What You Preach would have required months of work and great, band-wide inspiration.

I'm sure there is a more complete story out on the interweb, but the basic story here is that Testament wanted to tour with Monsters of Rock, but their label support them for it without a new album top promote. Under a TIGHT deadline (i think it was less then 6 months, but it could be even less), the band threw together this album, which has some great moments, ... Read More

Rating: out of 5 stars - Good, but too rushed.
After three excellent releases Testament brings us Souls of Black.
Probably my favorite album cover from Testament.
Oh yeah, the music.
I remember when this came out. I was quite surprised that it came out so soon after Practice What You Preach.
And it shows.
Yes, the disc is awesome. Everything I came to love from Testament.
But it had a rushed feeling to it. It basically copied the formula from Practice but didn't do anything to advance their status as a thrash pioneer. ... Read More

Rating: out of 5 stars - Brilliant!
This album is a must have if you are a Testament or a ThrashMetal fan! The title song is simply awesome and one of the best Metal songs ever!

This album has not been remastered but the soundquality is very good.

Rating: out of 5 stars - Sounds the same yet different.
Testament's "Souls of Black" had songs that were relatively familiar in sound to their 3 albums that preceded this CD. But I don't know what it is exactly, but it sounds different at the same time. Perhaps it's more melodic like in "Practice What You Preach" but containing more fast thrash like elements in "The Legacy"? That's what I seem to hear on this record. It's fairly progressive though, but it's definitely Testament and not bad. They even have an excellent ballad like song "The Legacy" which I think is ... Read More
