Editorial Review: Sometimes you find the gems, and sometimes they seek you out. This one plopped through the mailbox with a note saying it reminded someone of Talk Talk--at least, that was what they thought. They were wrong; it's much better than that. If you can imagine Nick Drake arranged by The Blue Nile, you'll have a pretty good idea where Duncan's coming from. And while that may not be the most cheerful place in the world--the overwhelming shade of the album seems to be blue--it produces some lovely songs. Sheik has one of those husky, whispery voices that makes emotions almost transparent, and the spare arrangements that frame it are like windows. Sounds airy, I know, but it's true. And since his songs happen to be damn good, the view, thought bleak, is one you can't take your eyes from. While there may never be a new Nick Drake, in Duncan Sheik there might just be a worthy heir. --Chris Nickson

I bought this album off the strength of "Barely Breathing" and "She Runs Away", and was neither surprised nor disappointed after giving it a listen. There is a sad and dark theme throughout, although at times Sheik struggles to maintain it. The album starts off strong with the hits mentioned above, begins to trails off (thanks to some uninspired lyrics and a somewhat redundant sound that starts wearing thin), and then returns to full strength at the end. "The End of Outside" is slightly more up ... Read More
Rating: - A keen ear for the subject
Some artists dazzle with virtuosity, impress with cleverness, or overwhelm you with profundity. Duncan Sheik's eponymous album does none of these. He has the knack of catching a certain situation or mood, and playing it back to us perfectly. In the chorus to 'Barely Breathing,' he captures that moment of tension between heart and mind, between the ability to discern the probably unhappy outcome and the inability to act on it, with the perfect timing of the last line: "...I could stand here waiting, ... Rating: - Taking the mantle of Jackson Browne...
Duncan Sheik is one of those artists from the 90s that makes this reviewer from the 70s believe in the return of the singer songwriter. His melodies are sweet and provacative, insightful and heart-wrenching. The production is good on the album, and it's something that's both good driving music and yet not too driving in its bass line for the office. Check him out if you're 49 or 29-I think you'll like him...
Rating: - Deceptively Simple
Sweet gentility offered in sorrowful loping of songs. Without any particular structure to his songs except a repeated slow-burn effect in his arrangement, if you simply enjoy a man with his guitar, and sparse string arrangement with piano, you should find this album endearing. The debut album of Duncan Sheik offers a range of genre driven interests.
His title tracks 'Drowning in Your Eyes' and 'Barely Breathing' are obviously intended to engage the wider audience who enjoy soft-rock structure ... Read More
Rating: - Monument to Mediocrity
I was recommended this album by a friend who listens to him feverishly. I'll be honest with you, this simply is not good music. The lyrics are extremely bland and teetering on level of outright childish. This faux poetry seems to be taken right out of the narration of a bargain bin supermarket romance novel.

You really had me going, wishing on a star
But the black holes that surround you are heavier by far"
