Based on Irish writer Roddy Doyle's novel and lovingly directed with admirable restraint by the sometimes bombastic Alan Parker, this quirky 1991 tribute to the enduring and universal power of American R&B took some cynical criticism for its reliance on Baby Boomer-era classics such as "Mustang Sally," "Take Me to the River," and "In the Midnight Hour." But that sword cuts two ways: by casting a motley crew of real musicians, including the guts 'n' gravel-voiced young vocalist Andrew Strong, Parker didn't have to do much coaxing to reveal the obvious respect and affection his players have for this music. The material may not be fresh, but the love with which it's played is timeless. --Jerry McCulley

I really like the music. I haven't watched the movie yet, but the music is great. It makes me want to get up and dance.

Rating: out of 5 stars - you gotta hear this!

Their leader is enamored by Wilson Puckett (yeah, download his stuff too), and attempts to form this amazing band that does covers of classic and some unknown old Motown tunes. It's amazing -- the talent is incredible (where ARE these people today?!) and it sucks you in. Well worth the ... Read More

Rating: out of 5 stars - Sterilized Soul
Great film, worthy of praise on many different levels including the musical performances. The "soundtrack" has been processed. Voices have been run through clippers, and the music re-mastered. It's a sad little example of what corporate suits think soul should sound like in order to sell more copies. Tatoo your soul and buy the originals.

Rating: out of 5 stars - The Commitments Soundtrack
This is a fantistic collection of music! All the tracks are filled with energy and good quality sound. Although not the original artists, they are great renditions of the classics. I would not hesitate to recommend this cd to anyone who likes rock classics.
