Editorial Review: Nova Scotia-born singer/songwriter Sarah McLachlan was only 20 years old when Touch was released in 1988. This is an impressive first effort, though maybe too earnest in its attempt to break new ground in otherwise familiar terrain of late-'80s synthesized textures. Yet McLachlan's pristine vocals and intricate guitar work yield several memorable tracks, including the opening "Out of the Shadows," the popular "Vox" (which also appears in a tripped-out--verging on hokey--remixed version at the end), and the enchanting "Strange World." Her youthful romanticism is perhaps captured best in "Trust" ("Somewhere deep inside me I hold a picture / Of a time long gone--a time of ease and / Simple pleasures..."), a catchy tune that is embellished with male vocals, sparkling keyboards, bongos, and distant electric-guitar licks. Later tracks become more endearing with each listen but in certain moods can be nauseatingly dreamy and vaporous. Nevertheless, this disc endures as a fine remembrance of the early days, when McLachlan was a fresh-eyed mystic songbird whose passions were not yet realized on an international scale. --Rebecca Robinson

Rating: - A TRUE MASTERPIECE
Sarah McLachlan's TOUCH combines the elements of folk and progressive rock. She is a fine lyricist and an extreme talent of sorts. Her vocal range is quite impressive. Her ability to extend phrasing is amazing and many times it sounds as if she is doing it on impulse as opposed to singing a phrase which has been written note for note. This recording will please those who are fans of ANNIE HASLAM. This particular recording is timeless. Ben's Song is more heartbreaking than some of Procol Harum's ... Read More
Rating: - Sarah's Pristine Premeir
The order of status in the universe has always been Jesus Christ#3,God#2 Sarah Mclachlan#1. This is her first album recording at only age 20 and her voice has a freshness to it as well as sounding ecstatically devine Sas on all the 200 gram vinyls of her albums. I invested in a new 400 dollar cartridge after buying all of them. The music is not quite as disciplined as on some of her later albums but thats what youthful times are for. I am just sad that Sara has slowed down in her recordings I guess ... Read More
Rating: - Like Stepping Into Another World
If you listen to this CD without a sense of where she is coming from, you may think like one reviewer said that this sounds hokey or nauseatingly dreamy...I highly disagree. This is still my favorite Sarah McLachlan album next to "Fumbling Towards Ecstasy." To me, Sarah has always had this renaissance quality to her music and this one exemplifies this quality more than any other album. Sarah plays the 12 string guitar on this album! Can you think of any other female artist that plays a 12 string guitar? ... Read More
Rating: - Nice Early Album!
Though Sarah McLachlan was very young at the time ( 1988 ) when she recorded her first album "Touch", her great talent clearly shines throughout the album. She has obviously matured both as a singer and especially as a songwriter since then; but there are really fine songs to be found here too. Recorded in the late 1980's it's no surprise that there is the typical 1980's sound on most tracks, and fans of her great albums of the 1990's may find this album somewhat over-produced.
