Rating: - Fantastic!
I purchased this recording on a whim. I just wanted to hear Corelli's Cavaradossi since he was considered one of the best. I expected to enjoy Nilsson's singing, but wasn't sure what to expect dramatically. And I've never been a fan of Fischer-Dieskau; I always considered him a fine leider singer, but that's it. Wow, what a surprise! Nilsson is not only a fine singer but a fine actress too. But the real surprise is Fischer-Dieskau; he's one of the finest Scarpias I've ever heard (along with ... Read More
Rating: - A luxury Tosca that falls short
This long-dismissed recording of Tosca has found a host of fans here at Amazon. I can't see why it deserves them. Maazel is so fussy with his phrasing that he can't bear to let a single aria flow naturally; every note must be shaped and molded within an inch of its life. The principals are all super-famous, and I agree with those who think Nilsoon was underrated in her Italian roles. She is fearless here, with dead-on accuracy and thrilling high notes. She's not at all Italiante, but she does very ... Read More
Rating: - An Interesting Aproach to TOSCA
TOSCA is really a three character opera: Floria Tosca, Cavaradossi, and Scarpia. Of course there are a few other roles, Angelotti and the Sacristan to name two, but the opera centers on the three major roles. For this reason, it's easy to find wonderful casts both on stage and in the recording studio. There are many wonderful recordings of TOSCA with some of opera's best known names: Callas, Tebaldi, Scotto, Freni, Price, Pavarotti, Gigli, di Stefano, and Milnes in the major roles. In general, that's ... Read More
Rating: - how not to sing opera
This recording is almost a textbook case of how NOT to perform "Tosca." Long dismissed as a "shabby little shocker," "Tosca" has remained Puccini's third best-known opera after "La Boheme" and "Madama Butterfly." What it lacks in tender lyricism it more than makes up for with its dramatic panache, vivid orchestration, and one of the few really good roles for baritone Puccini ever wrote (Baron Scarpia). Unfortunately, a work this overheated needs a little restraint which is absent in this recording. Lorin ... Read More
Rating: - One of the Top Four Or So
Though this recording will never topple the immortal Callas/Di Stefano/Gobbi recording, it is a very much in the running for second place. Nilsson and Corelli are in great form, Maazel provides a gread deal of excitement and for once Fischer-Dieskau doesn't totally ruin the show though he is no Tito Gobbi and in the opera house Nilsson and Corelli would have sonically crushed him like a bug. This may be one of his best ACTING performances on disc in the Italian rep. Nilsson IS the diva, Corelli IS the lover ... Read More
