Editorial Review:
Great for the small office or home business, the Xerox WorkCentre XD100 a digital copier and a laser printer in one unit, with deluxe copier features including a flatbed document glass, and the professional-looking prints you'd expect from a laser printer. It prints up to 8 pages per minute and copies up to 10 pages per minute.
The Xerox Workcenter XD-100 digital copier/laser printer is the source of newfound freedom for the home business owner. Set it up with your PC or as a standalone and you can schedule it to produce as many as 100 copies, reduce or enlarge them, and print text and black graphics at any time.
The XD-100 is large (20 by 17.5 by 12 inches and 41 pounds) and requires substantial desk space. We recommend you take seriously the orange warning page and follow the printed directions to avoid damaging the XD-100. We began by removing two protective screws and installing the ink cartridge; in seconds we were in copy heaven. Xerox includes a poster-sized waterproof and foolproof setup guide, which walks you through each step, but why anyone would need a permanent setup display is a mystery unless you plan on moving regularly.
We had our first paper jam at copy number 18 which, despite all user's guide suggestions, was best cleared by removing the paper tray and easing the page out from under the unit. Nevertheless, we found the XD-100 fast and efficient, and our copies were cleaner than those from a major copy center. You can set the copy contrast control and the exposure modes to auto, text, photo, and toner save. When set on photo mode, the XD-100's copies of images showed a greater range and nuance of grays.
The XD-100's most important quality is its speed; it prints at eight pages per minute and copies at 10 pages per minute with crisp 600 x 600 dpi resolution. The XD-100 stands alone as a copier or connects to a PC, producing laser-perfect results. We made great use of reduction and enlargement, from 50 to 200 percent in 1 percent increments, as well as six presets: 50, 78, 86, 100, 129, and 200 percent. Paper loads into a drawer, and printed copies emerge in an efficient permanent tray. The drawer holds 250 sheets and the unit prints or copies onto envelopes, transparencies, labels, card stock, and stationery in sizes of letter, legal, and executive. We tried hand-feeding envelopes and were very satisfied with printing quality, although this manual method is slow. There is no pause button; to reset we had to press clear and begin again. The maximum size for copies is 8.5 by 14 inches, and the maximum size for originals is 10 by 14 inches. The unit's hinged top accommodates thicker items such as magazines and books. The XD-100 is supported by a three-year parts-and-labor warranty. --David Greenberger
Pros:
  • Easy reductions and enlargements
  • High-quality prints and copies
  • Easy setup

Cons:
  • Overly detailed user's guide is more perplexing than instructive
  • Manual envelope feed

Rating: out of 5 stars - Excellent quality copies, poor service, unreliable hardware
I bought the XD100 three and a half years ago. The quality of the copies and printouts is outstanding. Excellent value when evaluating the purchase price versus features and quality compared to the competition. It was used as a printer and copier for family and small business use. During first year of service, no problems. After second year, the machine had J2 paper jams very often. Then a loud grinding noise signalled the demise of my fuser gear. I contacted Xerox under warranty, and Xerox sent ... Read More

Rating: out of 5 stars - Good Machine, Poor Service
I own several XD100 copiers and have had the same problems with each one. A plastic guide just inside the right hand door breaks signaling a J2 jam, the gear on the end of the hot roller breaks causing the paper to jam at the roller, and the drum unit develops lines before the end-of-life light signals replacement which I correct with a recycled drum from a local toner cartridge recycler. A technician can easily replace the other parts.
The copys are top quality, and for the price, the machine ... Read More

Rating: out of 5 stars - Great While It Lasted But I Won't Do It Again
How can a company grow its business when there's no follow through on service once you've purchased, and outrageous costs for parts? On a scale of 1-10, I'd rate my XD at a 10. I've had it at least 3 years, never had a problem. Then I experienced an "accordian" paper jam. Need a New Fuser Assembly. The one dealer near me said he no longer sells parts, only new copiers. Cost of part - almost as much as the copier. Time to wait for part - 10 days. Technician cost to install - almost as much ... Read More

Rating: out of 5 stars - Great...Until It Breaks (way too soon.)
I bought, essentially, this same machine 2 years ago. It worked well and my family used it on a regular basis. Then -- it started malfunctioning. The Xeroxed copy looked blurred (like the something had slid a little bit during the copying process.) We read the manual and did everything the trouble shooting guide recommended (cleaned it thoroughly, replaced both rollers, bought a new cartridge, etc.) Still, the copy was blurred. We called Xerox support. The tech kept insinuating that we had not REALLY ... Read More

Rating: out of 5 stars - Xerox has no credibility, don't been cheated again!
Firstly, when I bought this machine in the spring of 2000 from Officemax, there is a $50 mail-in-rebate promise from Xerox. But I never got any response from Xerox after I registered and mailed them receipt. Secondly, they not only overcharged for this lousy machine (over $500, much higher than other similar machine, but very often a lot of carbon powder overfilled and no any tonor can run claimed 6000 pages, I guess it is about 3000-5000), but also overcharged for tonor and drum about $180-200 for each, although ...
