Long recognized as role-playing games par excellence, the Final Fantasy series gets a technological makeover in this installment (and series debut on the PlayStation). Shedding the two-dimensional graphics and limited sound capabilities of its predecessors, Final Fantasy VII features lush 3-D graphics, beautifully animated "movie" sequences, and soundtrack-quality music. Coupled with the game's intricate storyline, endearing characters, and immense yet highly imaginative world, these new advancements make for a quite an engrossing experience.
The story of Final Fantasy VII centers around a solider named Cloud Strife, who joins forces with Avalanche, a group of resistance fighters, to take down an evil mega-corporation known as Shinra. (The fate of the world hangs in the balance, of course.) Truly epic in scope, this four-disc game requires a considerable amount of time to complete---this reviewer gladly gave up over 80 hours of his life to finish it. But it's definitely a rewarding adventure that every PlayStation owner should consider undertaking, especially since it's now one of the low-priced "Greatest Hits" titles. --Joe Hon
Pros:
  • Intricate and absorbing storyline with endearing characters
  • Immense and highly imaginative game world
  • Special battle system
  • Beautifully animated movie sequences

Cons:
  • Your friends and family may feel neglected

Rating: out of 5 stars - Do not pay $75 or more for a used copy of this. Not worth it.
I own Final Fantasy VII-X and this is by far the most overrated game in the entire series. My sister told me she bought this game at a vintage store for $60 and I rushed onto Amazon.com to see if she could have gotten it cheaper. I was absolutely appalled. Don't by into the hype. This is a good game, but it is NOT in ANY way worth the price of buying it on this site. Go buy it at a garage sale for $10 or borrow it from a friend for a month or so. People who are expecting others to pay that much money ... Read More

Rating: out of 5 stars - A ground breaking title in gaming history
If you have never played "Final Fantasy VII" and are considering purchasing it for more than you just payed for a brand new PS3 or XBox 360 game, read this review and you will find that your money is probably much better spent on this classic game. I did not play "Final Fantasy VII" when it first released in 1997. I played it with a fresh set of eyes in 2008 knowing only that many labeled it a classic. They couldn't have been more right. When "Final Fantasy VII" released it set a new paradigm for ... Read More

Rating: out of 5 stars - One of the finest games ever produced, for any platform!
I fondly remember the many hours/days/weeks that I played this game. It was the prime reason I bought my first Playstation. I look forward to testing out PS3's purported backward compatibility to the PS2 with this game.
I fervently hope Squaresoft considers reissuing this game for the PS3 with updated HD graphics and surround sound. I would buy it in a heartbeat!

Rating: out of 5 stars - Better Then The Pc Version
I Love It Its Fun. i Would Recomened This Game But Wait Just In Case PS3 Version Comes Out

Rating: out of 5 stars - Easily The BEST game I've ever played, and its 2008...
Let me start off by saying, Final Fantasy VII is highly revered by many gamers as the best of the series, and like stated before, like the indie music scene its cool to hate what is so popular, strictly because it has mass appeal. I am a musician, and i've fallen victim to this mindset many times before with pop music, and i've learned when it boils down to it, Like what you like, and don't worry about the mass appeal. I am not afraid to stick to my gun, this game is the best i've ever played.
