SquareSoft has always had a sure-fire hit when releasing any of their Final Fantasy titles, and Final Fantasy VIII should be no exception. The basis of a good RPG (role-playing game) has always been the story; spectacular graphics are secondary. Final Fantasy VIII's involved and interesting story line is filled with great twists, well-developed characters, suspense, and romance. As an added bonus, the graphics are beautiful. Everything--from the low-lit jazz club to the steam-filled railroad tunnels--is gorgeous and perfectly sets the mood and tone of a scene.
The game mechanics are standard fare for an RPG: acquisition of items and spells, turn-based combat, experience points earned in combat allowing advances in levels. From exploration to battles to dialogue, Final Fantasy VIII has it all. However, Final Fantasy VIII falls to that great weakness of RPGs: random battles. While necessary for advancing in levels, the battles occur with such frequency that they can grow annoying, making for a tedious game experience.
The epic storyline spans four discs--over 40 hours of gameplay--and is based around a mercenary cadet who finds himself caught up with an underground rebel faction. He winds up in a plot to assassinate the sorceress who has just seized power from the president.
You could complain of limited replay value, but this gripe is of no consequence: the game is such a satisfying experience, it doesn't require replay. Final Fantasy VIII is easily worth both the hype and the wait. You can't buy a much better game. --John Cocking
Pros:
  • A story to beat all stories
  • Characters worth caring about
  • Hey--it's from SquareSoft
  • Stunning animations
Cons:
  • Too many random battles
  • Combat is, as always, turn-based and offers minimal excitement
  • Weak souls might give up after two or three discs of play

Rating: out of 5 stars - A Final Fantasy That Tries Too Hard
When Final Fantasy VII debuted in 1997 it was hailed as the greatest of great RPGs. When Final Fantasy VIII came around in 1999, it had so much to live up to. So much hype that the bar was set too high, even for Final Fantasy VIII to hit. Almost ten years later, it's a little easier to look at Final Fantasy VIII with fondness. In part because that bar it had to reach is no longer there. The hype has settled. We can now look at Final Fantasy VIII for what it is. It's a great game to be sure, ... Read More

Rating: out of 5 stars - what happened
I think Squaresoft made this storyline overnite.I played this game for about 12 hours before going back to FF7.The worst storyline I have ever seen,no real twists in the game, and what is with that weird junctioning system.I was on disk 2 before I figured out how to junction properly.Buy Final Fantasy 7 its cheaper and better(by my opinion).

Rating: out of 5 stars - Better then the rest
I had been waiting for this game to come out for the longest time and when I finally got it, I was happy with what I got. The music is good, the graphics are great, and the story is just heart wrenching. I LOVED the characters, and I think that even though Squall (the main character) is so much like Cloud (main character of FF7) he is expressed more emotionally, so you learn to like him better. The story was all around good, the only negative was having to get into so many fights. I think that ... Read More

Rating: out of 5 stars - The BEST Game in the World
This is the best game! All of the characters seem really real, and it's a really cool storyline. The graphics are awesome as well. Plus, the people even LOOK real! And the main character is cute too! But the game is really cool!

Rating: out of 5 stars - FF8
At First when I baught this game and played it I thought... This is nuts but once i got the Stratagy guide and a memory card I learned the ture meaning of the game. I had played FF7 in the past for the computer and playstsatioon and thought that the graphics were awsome but this is taking Playstation and the computer to the maximum fun level. Final Fantasy Eight is really the Tradagty of the serise (I'v herd) but any way I'll play it until i beat it and then play and play it again.
