Editorial Review: By the mid-'80s Dire Straits were a platinum band dismissed in their native England as safe, yuppie rockers, yet the original quartet's lean, guitar-driven music struggled to find a label home when first recorded in 1978. Mark Knopfler offers craggy vocals, literate blues-based songs, and sinuous, virtuosic guitar work. He melds keening solo lines and rapidly picked fills and dodges the synth washes and postpunk power chords of then-competing new wavers; he relies on atmosphere, character, and pure musicianship intead of heavy irony or pop fashion. "Sultans of Swing," codifies this stance, a galloping paean to aging jazz musicians playing for the sheer love of the music. This became a major hit and has endured as a radio classic. The album itself has proven equally sturdy thanks to cinematic imagery and the tightly wound arrangements of "Down to the Waterline," "Six Blade Knife," and "Water of Love." --Sam Sutherland

Rating: - One of the Best!!
I love this CD. My old one was scratched up, so I had to get another, and a lower quality MP3 wasn't going to get the job done. FANTASIC!!!
Rating: - Dire Straits
I am a Mark Knopfler fan, this is one of the original Dire Straits album from 1978. Great songs, especially Water of Love. I had not heard that song for 20 years and now I play it daily.
Thank you.

Rating: - Solid Through and Through
Their first and in my opinion their best. Not a weak track on the album. My favorite tracks are " Water of Love " , " Down To The Waterline " and "Six Blade Knife " . As time goes by , I've probably considered all of the tracks the best of the album at one time or another . Get the remastered version . The group got a little "poppy" throughout the years . Kind of wished they stayed in this mode during their career. You'll see Mark Knopfler return to this style on most of his solo work .

Rating: - Amazing Remaster of a Great Debut Album
There's not much to add to the other reviews here--just that if you like this album, you'll love the remastered CD. I am very familiar with the recording from a well cared for original vinyl pressing. I've always loved most of the non-"Sultans" songs, especially "Down to the Waterline." One could argue the album is uneven top-to-bottom, but it certainly shouldn't be described as "Sultans" and filler. These guys knew how to play and were creating tight songs from the beginning, something most groups have ... Read More
Rating: - Classic Dire
I first bought "Dire Straits" when it came out in 1978 and immediately loved it. I bought the CD version of the album just a couple of months ago. The CD, which was remastered, was great. Mark Knopfler's guitar playing was always fantastic. But you can certainly pick up a lot more of the subtlety of his playing from the CD than you could from the old albums! At $10.99 this was a bargain for a great classic album/CD.
