Rating: - Good coverage, bad sound
I agree with the other reviewers here -- this 2-disk set has good coverage (I seem to remember buying it because it was the only anthology I could find at the time which included Love Is Like An Itching In My Heart) -- but the sound is pretty awful. I think during the remastering process someone decided to "clean up" the sound (with EQing, and maybe compression / limiting) which basically strips out the dirty-ness in the rhythm tracks that *made* these records (or maybe I'm just remembering the sound ... Rating: - You Can Read, Can't You?!
Yes, I believe they got it right this time, too. My first experience with the Supremes was spring of '62(?) with "Let Me Go the Right Way". (I'm glad it's on this package). I thought, "Yeah, let's hear more of THEM" but I didn't hear anymore for some reason until "Where Did Our Love Go?", the one that really launched the group considerably later. (Mary Wells was the biggest Motowner until then). Although there is some filler here, I cannot remember seeing so many HITS on one compilation unless it ... Read More
Rating: - Great, but not what I expected
Don't let my rating and my title confuse you. The CD is great -- everything for a Diana/Supremes fan. Why I'm disappointed is that I took these reviews to heart and expected to hear vast differences in songs like "Love Is Like An Itching In My Heart" or "You Keep Me Hangin' On". More of Flo and Mary and with some extended versions. Duh? Color me crazy but an extra five seconds on "YKMHO" is not an "extension" in my book. Nor do I understand how these people are hearing more background when the backing ... Read More
Rating: - Great overview of the girls
I'm really loving these high quality anthology's Motown have been hooking us up with recently. Smokey Robinsons Miracles and solo anthologies were cool, intelligently pieced together & very nicely packaged, and now Diana Ross gets the same treatment with the Supremes & there's also a solo anthology out there too. The Supremes were such a great group, and all their major singles are included here. This two disc set, like the Miracles, is also jam packed with lots of lesser known cuts that ... Read More
Rating: - So far, my favorite Supremes Anthology
Where things "Supremes" are concerned, it appears there will always be strong opinions about who contributed what to the group, and how important the contribution is. If for you, Diana Ross IS The Supremes, this is just another set. On the other hand, if you enjoy the concept of The Supremes as a group, this set is a very good thing. Furthermore, if you like the opportunity to hear Mary & Florence take the lead now and then, this is even better, though still a tease compared to the amount ... Read More
