Editorial Review:
Los Super Seven, conceived in 1998 as a one-off collaboration bringing together Texas norteno music and the East Los Angeles sounds of Los Lobos, return in this marvelous two-hour documentary. Original members, including Los Lobos's David Hidalgo and Cesar Rosas, are joined here by the likes of Brazilian singer-songwriter Caetano Veloso, Peruvian singer Susana Baca, and Raul Malo, the Cuban-born singer from the Mavericks; the result is a loose, pan-Latin supergroup (yes, there are more than seven of them) playing both traditional and original material. Interviews, background material, rehearsals, recording sessions for the Canto album (about 20 minutes of largely extraneous "studio moments" are among the DVD's bonus features), and footage from a New York concert take us through the creation and performance of some wonderful music that ranges in style from aching Mexican to lilting Brazilian, rhythmically charged Cuban, and beyond. This is beautiful stuff, with virtuoso singing and playing by all concerned. --Sam Graham
This fascinating look at the Grammy Award-winning Los Super Seven follows the band from studio sessions to the release of their album "Canto" and onto the concert stage. The critically acclaimed group has grown into a global phenomenon with music that encompasses international sounds from Cuba, Mexico, Puerto Rico, Peru and Brazil. Each member of the "super group" adds his or her own unique musical traditions and masterful style: Los Lobos members David Hidalgo and Cesar Rosas, Tejano singer Ruben Ramos, country singer Rick Trevino, Raul Malo of The Mavericks, arranger/musician Alberto Salas, Brazilian singer/guitarist Caetano Veloso, and Peruvian singer Susana Baca. Songs: Siboney, El Que Siembra Su Maiz, Paloma Negra, Mi Ranchito, Compay Gato, El Canoero, Qualquer Coisa, Baby, El Pescador, Campesino, Paloma Guarumera, Drumi Mobila, Me Voy Pa'l Pueblo, Teresa, Calle Dieciseis, Guantanamera.

Rating: out of 5 stars - Great singing and playing
I knew little about hispanic music before buying Los Lobos recordings and the first two Super Seven cd's. This dvd is pure excellence. It shows the musicians working hard to come up with the right arrangements to back up as fantastic a group of vocalists as you will find on any dvd. No two voices alike and thrown in are two representatives of South America, Caetano Veloso, a great favorite of mine, and Susana Baco from Peru. The dvd includes studio and live performance footage and it is hard to beat ... Read More
