Using only one page script and the memory of his stage production, director Alejandro Jodorowsky blended surreal beauty and savage imagery to fashion this bizarre tale of corrupted innocence, sadomasochistic love, and unattainable paradise. Fando and Lis premiered at the 1968 Acapulco Film Festival, inciting a riot that forced the director to flee for his life. In the ensuing scandal, the film was banned. Jodorowsky was branded a heretic, forced ot stand trial and nearly deported. This DVD is now available in the Anchor Bay/ABCKO box set. The Anchor/ABCKO transfer is better than the original Fantoma release. The documentary on the Fantoma release is also included on the Anchor Bay disc, and the commentary is the same here as it is on the Anchor/ABCKO release. Unfortunately, this disc is not available seperately (like El Topo and The Holy Mountain are) from Anchor Bay. You have to buy the box set to get it. Rating:  - I find grass growing to be more entertaining
Apparently when this film was released at the 1968 Acapulco Film Festival it incited a riot and while making his escape Jodorowsky's limousine was pelted by rocks. When the film was released in Mexico City it incited a riot there as well and almost led to Jodorowsky's deportation. I strongly agree that they should have deported him because I believe that this is possibly the worst film that I have ever seen. Fando & Lis is like watching what is going on in someones imagination when they are dreaming. Its very surreal and will have you wondering just were its going to take you next. If your looking for a movie different from what your use to watching, buddy this is the movie for you.

Ive never seen a movie like Fando & Lis and never heard of this director Alejendro Jodorwsky, and im glad I found out about him. Its hard to put into words why I liked this film so much, there is so much symbolisim and meaning in every scene its like bizzare poetry. I didnt find this movie boring at all and I didnt have a hard time figuring out what was going on and I dont think you would either. When Alejandro Jodorowsky's debut Fando y Lis was originally released back in 1967, a full-scale riot broke out in the audience, the director barely escaped the theater with his life, and the film was banned. That has got be the best, most intriguing publicity I have ever heard of any picture receiving. Of course, when I heard about this, I simply had to see it.
