For outstanding functionality at a truly affordable price, look no further than Toshiba's Satellite series portable PCs. These portable PCs are built to deliver impressive specification together with exceptional value-for-money: an unbeatable price/performance combination that ensures the world's most advanced mobile technology is accessible to every portable computer user.Great for popular, educational, and small business applications, the Satellite 1415-S173 offers a fast Intel processor, easy-to-read 15" XGA display, the nVIDIA GeForce4 420 Go graphic chip for quick screen refresh, and a large storage capacity. Integrated 10/100 Ethernet and V.92/56K modem make connection to network and Internet easy.
Although it isn't the most powerful portable on the market, the Toshiba Satellite 1415-S173 notebook will effectively handle most day-to-day computing tasks and a variety of multimedia applications without breaking your bank account. If you don't have a compelling need for the most recent top-of-the-line components, the 1415-S173 is a wise choice.
Toshiba takes advantage of the recent glut of high-end processors by utilizing a cost-effective yet very capable 1.8 GHz Intel Celeron. It has paired this CPU with 256 MB of PC1600 DDR SDRAM (expandable to 512 MB), a 400 MHz system bus, and a 16 MB nVidia Go 420 graphics controller. While this level of performance won't be enough to satisfy 3-D artisans or hard-core gamers, it's more than enough for most standard notebook purposes.
The 1415-S173 isn't just for business either. Using its multifunction DVD/CD-RW drive, you can watch a movie or play a music CD, burn your own compilation audio disc, or archive your important files. Whatever you do, the system's generous 15-inch TFT active-matrix display will capably render your images at resolutions up to 1,024 x 768.
You'll find lots of other goodies inside the unit's 12.8-by-11.2-by-1.7-inch, 8-pound frame, including a full-size 85-key keyboard, 12 one-touch Internet and multimedia buttons, a convenient touchpad pointing device, a sizable 30 GB hard disk, and a convenient 3.5-inch floppy disk drive. The system features a wide variety of connections, including three USB ports for plug-and-play peripherals, two multipurpose PC card slots, a 56K modem for low-speed connectivity, and 10/100 Ethernet support for high-speed surfing and e-mail access.
Toshiba has equipped the 1415-S173 with a broad range of popular software, including Windows XP Home Edition, Microsoft Works, Intuit Quicken Basic 2001, and Norton AntiVirus 2002.

Rating: out of 5 stars - Old Reliable
I have had the 1415-S173 for 4 years now. And the best analogy I can give for it is this: This laptop is like a Honda Civic. It's simple and reliable. It'll never wow you with it's power or features. (In fact, it wouldn't do it back in 2002, when it was an above-average laptop), but it's efficient, well made, very sturdy (it can handle the errant fall. Just trust me on this one), and is a great deal for the price. You'll get a lot of mileage out of it. Provided it's plugged in. The only ... Read More

Rating: out of 5 stars - Toshiba 1415=S173
I've had this Toshiba since November, 2002. Everytime I think about buying a new laptop, I have to ask myself why?! This laptop is everything I need. I'm not a "gamer", and I don't download pics or video's. I primarily use my laptop for homework (online college) and internet searches. I use it almost every day and am really quite happy with it. The thing I have never bought is a PC card for wireless networking. I wasn't sure if I needed one, hence the name "Satellite", but I do! I've been ... Read More

Rating: out of 5 stars - Good at first...but doesn't last long
I'll admit this review is a little dated since this product isn't in the market anymore, but I was shocked to see how many GOOD reviews it had. I've had this laptop for a little over three years now, and since then, I've gone through two hard-drives with another about to die, and the cd-burner/dvd-rom hasn't worked well since about the second month of purchase. I've never gotten any games (even the low-end graphics ones) to work on here. It also seems like this system is highly vulnerable to viruses. ... Read More

Rating: out of 5 stars - Toshiba Satellite 1415-S173, is my favourite
toshiba satellite is one of the best product to i ever like in the whole of my life. The toshiba note book is the best in which all person should afford to buy. But in Nigeria to even get one of this laptop, it is very difficult for me myself to get it and i want you amazon company to consider me and bring the price lower so that i can buy it.

Rating: out of 5 stars - Mouse Crashes after Hibernation
When waking the computer after hibernation mode, the built in mouse no longer works unless the computer is rebooted, which is tricky to do without a mouse.
