The coax cable connects to your tv, while the composite or S-video cables are used to connect to the DVD player. DVD players never have a coaxial output, and older TV's rarely have any inputs other than the standard RF (coax) input.
The gold-plated cables are a step up from the basic, and are beneficial because they ensure greater signal transfer and a higher quality picture because they are corrosion resistant.

This is NOT the "Basic" DVD hookup, this is the "DVD Cable Upgrade Kit" for TV's with MULTIPLE input connections. If you have only a coax connector on your TV, this is NOT the kit for you!
