Average Rating:
Rating: - In b&w, static picture, sound could be better
This documentary, in black and white, shows the artist playing violin solo, with accompaniment, or in concerts, but the scenes are relatively static, the quality of sound could be better, and the picture in not much richer than a slightly animated slide show, unless the objective is to see the artist's technique. There is no much advantage of watching this documentary over listening just the music from CD.
Rating: - Rare historical footage of one of the greatest violinists
This DVD is a chance to see rare footage of one of the greatest violinists of the 20th century, performing works ranging from Bach Partitas to the Brahms Concerto. His own arrangement of the Paganini 24th Caprice is especially worth watching.
Also, lets not forget the rare bonus footage on this DVD of another great violinist of the same time period, Mischa Elman, who performs two short works, one of them by Kriesler.

Perhaps if EMI had seen fit to include ... Read More
Rating: - If you play violin.....
you need this DVD. What a champion.
Rating: - The Ideal Violinist
"The Ideal Violinist" -- that's what Fritz Kreisler called Milstein. Need other reasons to buy this DVD? Okay: how about that if you never got to hear Milstein "live" (I did), this is about as close as you're going to get any time soon as nothing else is currently available (I know the recording studios are holding out more of these gems...make 'em give it up!). The sound and film quality are very fine for this vintage and the playing gives new meaning to the phrase "iron fist ... Read More
