The true story of Carl Upchurch, A Philadelphia ghetto native who is in and out of jail numerous times by the time he's a teenager - until a compassionate prison teacher and a book of Shakespear's sonnets insprie him to turn his life around by embracing education. By the early 1990's, Carl has become a crusader for peace who organizes the first-ever national gang summit, persuading rival gang leaders to call unheard of truces.

Rating: out of 5 stars - Omar is over looked again
Omar is great in this movie but few people now about it. This is great and continues to be over looked. He some how even gets lost in the cast of 'House'. One black man in a group of white folks. How is it possible for him to be un-noticed? Omar is a true talent and I wish him the best.

Rating: out of 5 stars - Review
I personally know Carl Upchurch's family. While the movie shows his transformation to an outspoken leader against violence, a life he once lived. Carl had his hand in the production of this movie so that it mirrored his experiences brilliantly.

For a better experience, see his autobiography [...] It does an even better job of detailing the most influential parts of Carl's life.

Great movie. Very uplifting and thought-provoking. Finally a film that tackles urban violence without romanticizing it. What the movie romanticizes is the main character's love for the people in these urban settings, and his wish to empower them with the ideas that transformed him from a voilent-minded criminal to an urban peace activist. This kind of movie has been made several times before, but next to conviction these other movies don't measure up. Conviction is truly a gem. If you enjoy ... Read More

Rating: out of 5 stars - Making a positive change, and becoming a role model
This movie is based on a true story about Carl Upchurch(Omar Epps). The movie shows that despite your background, you can make a positive change, and make a difference in other people's lives. The movie starts out showing Upchurch waking up from a dream, and then you flashback into various stages of his life. Philly 1958 shows him with his mother, who does nothing but cuss and fuss at him while getting ready for a date. Flash forward Upchurch is upset one of his friends has been murdered and resorts ...
