Editorial Review: Released almost exactly 11 years after Clint Eastwood's Unforgiven, Kevin Costner's Open Range proved yet again that the Western is the classic American genre. While it lacks the thematic impact of Eastwood's masterpiece, Costner's first film since 1997's ill-fated The Postman returns the actor/director of Dances With Wolves to the open prairies of America--in this case the free-range frontier of 1882--where legal "free-grazing" cattle drives were falling prey to empire-building land-owners. In the wake of territorial murder, free-grazing cowboys Boss (Robert Duvall) and Charley (Costner) seek vengeful justice against the ruthless rancher (Michael Gambon) who threatens their law-abiding survival. A feisty ally (the late Michael Jeter, in his next-to-final film role) and a doctor's sister (Annette Bening) offer support during climactic shootouts, masterfully staged with the shock and suddenness of real-life gunfire. Rich in character development and thick-hided humor, this handsome production redeemed Costner's directorial career with a well-told story (by Craig Storper, based on Lauran Paine's novel The Open Range Men), flawless performances, and stunning Canadian locations. --Jeff Shannon

Rating: - A 'must have' for your library
Costner and Duvall do a great acting job with this storyline and have a great supporting cast. If you have to even get it used, get it. It's a great 'modern day' made western of classic proportions.
Rating: - Kevin & Co. come up with a winner
After a series of flops, artistically and commercially, Kevin Costner returned to the genre that first brought him success: the Western. The best decision he ever made as director/producer was to highlight Robert Duvall in the lead role since he's one of the few actors who look comfortable in Western garb, the other 2 being Clint Eastwood & Tom Selleck. But it's Duvall's authority and grace which really contribute to making this Western such a success for Costner. Also he skillfully cast such ... Read More
Rating: - Open Range Movie
My husband and son are big western movie and Robert Duvall fans. I purchased this movie for my son and he has been very happy with it.
Rating: - Open Range
The best (and longest) shootout sequence ever for the guys and there is a love story woven in for the girls. I bought this copy as a gift for a friend who enjoys westerns. I enjoy watching it 2 or 3 times a year. Great western.
Rating: - Like good wine...
... this great production grows on one with each successive taste. I liked it on the big screen; was surprised how much better it was the second time around via TV; third time was the charm - a new classic had taken its rightful place in my small DVD collection.
It has a different vibe, in some respects, when compared to "Unforgiven" - not quite as raw - but equally intelligent & compelling. A western for those who do not like westerns!
