Rating: - Ultra ULT31310 HDD enclosure - fan replacement
I've owned an Ultra ULT31310 with a WD 320GB drive for about 1 year without problems - except for the noisy fan other reviewers complain about. I tried the WD40 trick on the fan bearing, which helped a little but it was still noisy. I think this fan is rated at 25dBa.

Rating: - Good price with faults
The product works, that's the good side. The downside is the fan issue. After the 2nd or 3rd use the fan would sound like it was grinding against something. With a little tapping on the grille that covers the fan I am able to get the grinding sound to stop, but I have to do that everytime I turn the enclosure on.
I would have probably gone with a different product if I'd been smart & read the reviews BEFORE I made this purchase.
Rating: - Easy to use but too loud
I have been using this enclosure for a year, and it has held up a lot better than I thought it would. I've opened it up and swapped drives a few times consolidating data among several computers. It's great that it has a cooling fan - keeps the drive nice and cool, which makes it a good enclosure for a backup drive. However, I originally bought it for my husband to use with his pro tools rig for recording audio, and this drive enclosure is way WAY TOO LOUD for that.

Very cheap materials and construction. The fan in mine makes so much noise I have to keep it closed up in a cabinet. I'm currently looking for a replacement. I would not recommend this product.

Over the last 10 years I've upgraded my computer systems about 4 times. At one point I had 3 extra hard drives lying around from my old systems and I hated to throw them out. I had them stored in my home office closet. When my wife's system crashed and she had to upgrade she was upset at all the files she thought she lost. I told her to hang on, we might be able to save them.
