When most folks think of Truckin' music, Red Sovine and Dave Dudley usually are first to come to mind. Well, here is a great voice that combines the gritty sound of the road with the bounce of Bakersfield; an incredible combination that resulted in the most recognizable figures of '60's country. This was Red's first album, and the folks at Sundazed Records deserve the highest praise for re-releasing this one. Rating: - Bakersfield twang meets trucker country
Simpson was already minting his Bakersfield legend when he recorded this debut for Capitol in 1966. He had regular gigs around town (notably replacing Buck Owens at the Blackboard) and was one of Owens' regular songwriting partners, hitting with "Gonna Have Love" and later with "Sam's Place." He'd already written a few trucking songs when producer Ken Nelson came looking for someone to record an entire trucking-themed LP.
