The second TV pilot of COLUMBO, RANSOM FOR A DEAD MAN, was broadcasted on March 1st, 1971. It's also possible to see this pilot in the DVD standard by purchasing Columbo - The Complete First Season. The second villain of the Columbo saga is played by the multi-awarded Lee Shampoo Grant whose performance here is, in my opinion, praiseworthy.

This is the 2nd Columbo TV movie. This movie was aired before the start of the TV series and was such a success that it helped to launch the series soon afterword. This could be called a pilot for the TV series. As in the series that followed the script of the movie was expertly written and establishes Columbo as the character that he is to become. One of the highest quality TV series of all time with great writing and great acting. In this movie there is a classic battle of wits between Columbo and the murderess.
