This entertaining and enlightening show is the most definitive biography of Buddy Holly ever assembled, featuring interviews with members of The Crickets and many of Buddy Holly's family and friends who knew him best. Rating: - Just what it says on the tin
This DVD does just what it says on the tin. It tells the real story of Buddy Holly's life and music, using interviews with people who knew him well (like the original Crickets) and people influenced by him (like Keith Richards). This is the definitive introduction to the greatest genius of the rock'n'roll era.
Rating: - RAVE ON
Hat's off to Paul McCartney for getting this well-filmed documentary done and for correcting the many inaccuracies of the the Gary Busey film on Buddy Holly. Interviews with Buddy's brothers (Larry and Travis Holley), former band members (Sonny Curtis, Jerry "J.I." Allison, Joe B. Hall, Tommy Allsup, and Bob Montgomery), and other Holly associates in the music business (Bob Thiele, Murray Deutch, Ben Hall, Vi Petty, and Dick Jacobs) provide the needed credibility to finally get the story right. Rating: - McCartney should have studied the Rutles mockumentary
Any Buddy is good Buddy as far as I'm concerned, and snipets of this are compiled is a shorter version that plays on a loop at the Buddy Holly Center in Lubbock TX . This piece was informative, yet lacking of a great amount performance footage (if anymore exists). The documentary looks dated and put together not unlike older PBS local stories. The average fan will learn far more about Holly & the Crickets after a viewing, yet McCarney's tone of downplaying Gary Busey's "The Buddy Holly Story" was ... Read More
Rating: - Great subject and solid Documentary
Buddy Holly gets a nice treatment by Paul McCartney here. The story is told from the perspective of those who were his musical peers and those a little younger who would be influenced by his amazing talent. I love the technical stuff about how he strummed and the way they worked different drum techniques into the recordings. The best part may have been the few seconds of Keith Richards or the Everly Brothers though. To hear how sincere they are in their love of the guy was great. As Richards says, ... Read More
Rating: - A MUST companion
Not as "entertaining" as the 1978 Oscar winning version of "The Buddy Holly Story," but this video is a must have companion to that movie. Done with love and respect by all who participated, you get a real sense of what a decent and talented (in ways more than just musical) person that Buddy Holly was. The theatrical movie is a nice tribute, but "The Real Buddy Holly Story" is what every rock buff should view to appreciate the essence of Holly's greatness.
