Editorial Review: Can prolific, heartfelt singer-songwriter Sam Beam do any wrong? The title track to this six song EP continues much in the same vein as 2004's exceptional Our Endless Numbered Days. Recorded with Red Red Meat alum Brian Deck, Woman King subtly opens the sonic palette up to include more percussion, piano, and wait is that an electric guitar? "Grey Stables" and "Evening on the Ground," have gorgeous fiddle playing, while the pacing and multi-limbed percussion of those songs and "Freedom Hangs Like Heaven" are very Allman Brothers (that's a good thing.) It's not all slowly stewing nouveau Southern rock, however. The sweet, vocal-fueled "Jezebel" would easily have fit on the first album, while the lovely ballad "In My Lady's House" demonstrates further why siblings should sing together, as Sam and sister Sarah hit ideal harmonies. --Mike McGonigal
This Latest Release is Striking Both for Its Broadened Palette and Its Thematic Focus on Female Characters Both Archetypal and Personal.

Rating: - amazing.
One of my favorite CD's ever. You definitely have to be in a certain mood for Iron and Wine, but when that mood hits, this is the go-to album.
Rating: - Soothing Music
I've been listening to Iron and Wine for several years now, ever since I heard their cover of the Postal Service's Such Great Heights. Just bought The Shepard's Dog, not long ago and was surprised to see yet another cd had been released so soon in the form of the Woman King. Needless to say, it's the same great music that I have come to expect from this group. The best thing I can say about Iron and Wine's music is that is soothes the soul. As an example, I was doing some major renovation on ... Read More
Rating: - Stellar
This guy does not disappoint. It's a little moody and at times seething but his talent is evident on each and every track. It is raw, sensual and melodic. Buy it!! (if you're an Iron & Wine newbie check out "These Endless Numbered Days" first)
Rating: - Spreading his wings
Sam Beam uses this six song EP to twiddle the formula that made "Our Endless Numbered Days" such a sweet discovery. He's expanding beyond the Nick Drake of the south style that served such fluffy clouds of sound on songs like "Sodom South Georgia." Here, he spikes the title song of "Woman King" with clattery percussion and a feistier tempo than before. And those fuzzed out electric guitars on "Evening On The Ground?" Who'd have thought!
While those who have grown comfortable with Beam's ... Read More
Rating: - Like a Steady Breeze
Sam Beam has a great EP here. His contemporary folk music is original and intense despite the soft guitars and rhythms. Backing female vocals make the songs that much more haunting. Both relaxing and challenging at the same time, Woman King is a distinctive and important piece of work well worth multiple listens.
