The broadcast series Scrapped Princess (2003) gives new meaning to the term "anti-hero." Pacifica Cassul was born under a baleful star: according to the prophecy she's the poison that will cause the end of the world on her 16th birthday. As the fatal day approaches, she's on the lam with her older brother and sister, Shannon and Raquel. They're charged with protecting her from worshippers of the god Mauser, who believe in the prophecy. Pacifica isn't the most likable character: she fusses and whines and sticks her siblings with all the work. The filmmakers try to balance her petulance with mawkish scenes of doubt and self-pity. The villains multiply in Ichiro Sakaki's story until it's not clear just who's out to get Pacifica. Despite its shortcomings, Scrapped Princess scored a big hit in Japan and may well prove popular in America. (Rated 13 and older: violence, brief nudity) --Charles Solomon

Rating:  - Great Fantasy story
This series is completely bewitching. It peeks your curiosity and compels you to watch more. I find myself falling in love with each of the characters. The episodes seem to end too quickly unlike "Orphan Revenge" where I find myself feeling forced to watch another minuet of that garbage. The artwork for the magic sequences was well done. I love this series so much as a true collector I have ordered the limited editions of each of the 6 volumes.

There is actually something other than Sunday Morning cartoons in this series. I recommend it.

This is definately not a simple story of good and evil. That air of uncertainty helps to give this story a degree of charm that one rarely sees in animation. Pacifica Cassul is a very complex heroine, at times bratty, and others times very thoughtful. The relationship that she has with her siblings, Shannon and Raquel, is every bit as rocky as one would expect from people in such a circumstance. Rating: - Watch the subtitled version - the English dub is awful
While I love this series, I can see how the Editorial Review by Charles Solomon turned out so dismissive and negative. He obviously watched the series with the English language soundtrack, and this has colored his opinion of the whole series. In the English dub, the character of Pacifica comes across as whiny, shrill and annoying. She is far more sympathetic sounding in the original Japanese voicing.
