Editorial Review: Small enough to keep with you at all times, and ideal for listening to your favorite music in planes, trains, and automobiles, the Sony MDR-NC50 Noise Canceling Headphones significantly reduce outside noise so you can hear music as it's meant to be heard -- without any background noise or interference. The headphones' noise-canceling circuit reduces ambient noise with a phase-canceling process and provides a noise reduction of 14 dB at 300 Hz. The Sony MDR-NC50 Noise Canceling Headphones uses tiny, built-in sensors that send equal-but-opposite canceling signals to the headphone drivers. This phase-canceling process "blocks" outside noise and is especially effective on noises like air-conditioners or transportation rumble. The Sony MDR-NC50 Noise Canceling Headphones allows you to turn this feature on-and-off with a "Noise Canceling" switch on the headphone housing. The function can run for up to 30 hours on one AAA battery, and with the ability to switch the feature off, you'll be able to conserve your battery life and use noise canceling only when it's needed. Sony has not scrimped on comfort with the MDR-NC50. These headphones feature an ear-conscious design with soft earpads, an adjustable band to fit nearly any head, and a slim folding style that is perfect for travelers. What's in the Box Sony MDR-NC50 Noise Canceling Headphones, carrying case, in-flight plug adapter, unimatch plug adapter, and 1.5 meter connecting cord.

Rating: - Great sound but quite bulky
I just got back from another quiet flight thanks to the Sony noise canceling headphones and my iPod. The sound quality was terrific! It blocks external noise so well that I accidently aggravated a flight attendant because I didn't even hear his beverage offer. The downside is bulkiness which only bothers me slightly for sleeping and is more inconvenient due to the precious carry-on space it consumes.
Its really important to put them on the right way because the ear pieces are slanted ... Read More
Rating: - Great Product
My husband loves these. He says they are as good as those other more expensive ones.
Rating: - WANT EAR DAMAGE?, THEN BUY SONY!
I bought a pair of these in FEB'06 for almost $200. For that price you would think they would last more than 2 years, especially when they've only been used about 20 times. Nope last few flights, I get this constant annoying, almost deafening, high pitch blaring with the noise cancelling feature on. It stops briefly when I tap on the ear piece then returns. I even tried new batteries to no improvement.
I called Sony customer care to see if they could exchange them with a refurbished product. ... Read More
Rating: - Sony MDR-NC50 Noise Canceling Headphones
I was looking into the Bose noise canceling headphones, willing to pay the big bucks, but read some reviews of these and decided to take a chance and ordered them, I am very happy with the purchase. The noise canceling works great and they are very comfortable. I can't say how they rate next to the Bose, because I was not able to compare, but for the price I am very pleased with my purchase.
Rating: - Great for the price
My Bose headphones fell apart at the headband-phones joint, and I didn't feel like parting with another $300, so I picked up the Sonys. They are a little more sturdy, shouldn't break apart in the same way. The noise cancellation works fine, and the noise reduction even when they are off is good (I do follow the FAA rule of turning off all electronics for take-off and landing). The only downside I have noticed is that if you press on the outside of the headphones you get a pretty annoying feedback. ... Read More
