Editorial Review: Don't let the headless CGI dancer on the cover fool you. While Stand Up has a more organic feel than 2001's radio-ready Everyday, it is hardly an invocation for carefree days spent twirling on the grass. Instead it is a call to arms that carries over much of the insurrectionary spirit the Dave Matthews Band brought to 2004's Vote For Change Tour. Matthews, sounding rawer than ever, swerves between optimism ("To change the world you only start with one step," he sings on "You Might Die Trying") and angst ("See the man with the bomb in his hand/ Everybody wake up," goes "Everybody Wake Up [Our Finest Hour Arrives]"), while producer Mark Baston, best known for his small-time work with big-name pop acts like Beyonce and 50 Cent, responds by putting the marching band rhythms of Carter Beauford in the front and galvanizing the music with a crisp R&B edge, most evident in the totally - okay, partially - crunk "Stolen Away On 55th & 3rd." --Aidin Vaziri

Rating: - Fantastic Disappointment
It's hard to look forward and be hopeful and open minded about this album when there is so much great music in DMB's past. Jazz musicians of this caliber are enormously gifted and continually challenge convention. They usually despise repetition and are always looking for new challenges. Thinking outside the norm is what makes jazz. They are constantly moving on.
So when I see how far - yet how narrow the path - DMB has come from "Under the Table and Dreaming", "Busted Stuff", and ... Read More

Don't understand it. It seems like Dave Matthews' overall intent ever since "Before These Crowded Streets" has been to make DMB's music more and more accessible, sacrificing musicality and innovation for cheap pop cliches...First "Everyday", then this...
I'm a huge fan of DMB...Before These Crowded Streets probably goes down as my favorite album ever, bar none. They are a great, great group of musicians, and nothing really can change that fact. But ever since they dropped Lillywhite, it ... Read More
Rating: - "Dave's not here"
The Dave Matthews Band was once proclaimed the next Grateful Dead, with its clean-shaven,former bartender Jerry Garcia avatar,Dave. The DMB got mainstream appeal with its "Everyday" album, produced by Glen Ballard (who also produced Alanis Morrissette),but it came at a price. "Everyday" went multi-platinum,it got Grammy nominations. Dave Matthews got recognition he never had as a University of Virginia jam band leader. However, the DMB watered down its sound.
"Stand Up" was produced by an R&B/hip ... Read More
Rating: - DMB @ their best!
In reference to the DRM concerns, I've had no problems playing this awesome CD on my computer or iPod. I'm not the newest nor the oldest fan; I've followed them for about 10 years but this album has quickly emerged as my favorite. The guest artists are amazing; I think it's DMB at their best. I can't recommend it highly enough!

American Baby got me hooked enough to seek out this CD and buy it. Listening to the CD once, I realized that I had heard another song on the CD before (Old Dirty Hill) but didn't recognize it as DMB. However, I loved the song.
Although the whole CD isn't a traditional DMB CD, I think it's a great branch out on their sound. I have played this album over and over again and every time I love it more and more. DMB should really be proud of this album, and it has made me appreciate this band as a group ... Read More
