After its most prolonged absence from the recording studio, Sleater-Kinney has reloaded with a smoldering rock and roll record that rivals John Lennon's Plastic Ono Band and Nirvana's In Utero in terms of unexpectedness. It is a 180-degree proclamation to the album which came before it. Producer David Fridmann (Weezer, Flaming Lips) coaxed the Portland, OR trio to retool its approach to making music. The results are startling and far and away the most collaborative, experimental and risky in the band's seven-record career. Corin Tucker's supreme guttural form is on display from the lead-off track "The Fox"--a would-be children's tale overridden by crunching power chords and drummer Janet Weiss's battering percussion. The Woods tugs on your ear musically and stabs at your heart lyrically on riff-wielding jaunts "Wilderness," "Modern Girl" and "Rollercoaster." The live-in-one-take, 11-minute blockbuster "Let's Call It Love" unleashes Carrie Brownstein's foray into guitar-solo psychedelic. Haven't heard Sleater-Kinney yet? Try Dig Me Out and work your way forward. Already on board? Find a steady chair, feel your ears bleed and watch your speakers disintegrate. --Scott Holter
The Portland trio's first album for Sub Pop. A much more riff-heavy affair, this album finds the band pushing their sonic/compositional boundaries, while maintaining their identity. The limited edition version (25,000) comes with a bonus DVD featuring five performances of new songs recorded live in Portland.

Rating: out of 5 stars - How to Ruin Great Songwriting
The band made a historically odd choice of introducing an effect on several of the songs that- I guess- is supposed to make you think something is wrong with your gear. I changed a pair of batteries in my cd player after listening to a song that started out clean sounding, then gradually decayed into a mushy, abrasive static-fest. Jokes on me.

Underneath all this puzzling production experimentation, you can tell the songwriting and band chemistry is still as strong as ever, but the ... Read More

Rating: out of 5 stars - Astonishing psychedelic rock; pity about the lyrics.
This is one of the greatest albums to grace modern rock, and it is a tremendous pity for S-K to call it quits after finally producing the masterpiece they've been threatening of since Dig Me Out.
People have mentioned the degree of unexpectedness of this album, and I must agree: though One Beat had a heavily experimental sound, S-K have never sounded so psychedelic before.
This album- and it must be listened to and judged as an album- achieves a level of musical complexity, exuberance ... Read More

Rating: out of 5 stars - Kick Ass
This cd starts off with a bang and keeps it up throughout all ten songs.
It gets better every time I listen to it. I started listening to s-k a few years ago and this one is probably my favorite next to One Beat. (though for me it's kind of hard to pick a favorite)
My favorite songs are "What's Mine is Yours" (i love the guitar part at the beginning), "The Fox"(I love how it just jumps right in,loud as hell, and full of energy), and "Steep Air"(this is my favorite song on the cd).

Rating: out of 5 stars - Let's call it love.
I've been been following S-K for years, and I was blown away by this CD. Musically, this is terrific rock album without a single weak track. As much as I've always liked them, I have to say that I was really surprised at this -- it goes way beyond anything they've done before. This isn't light-weight "girl rock" or "girl punk" that is produced by bands like The Donnas or Gwen Stefani. Most of the songs are deep-down hard rock, and the beating heart of this monster is the incredible drumming of Janet ... Read More

Rating: out of 5 stars - The Depressions
This album was heralded by Pitchfork. I thought I was in for something phenomenal and captivating. I found nary. Sure the songs are musically sound and the singing and instumentation are pretty interesting, but it's nothing that grabs you nor does it make you want to listen to it again. You should know that this is an all-girl band. If you have a doubt as to whether you could like an all-girl band then you definetly won't enjoy it so do yourself a favor and don't buy this. To conclude, it's good enough ... Read More
