Editorial Review: Few country songwriters are both smarter and funnier than Robbie Fulks, though his humor has saddled him with a reputation as a purveyor of smart-aleck novelty fare. Except for the hillbilly hokum of "I'm Gonna Take You Home (And Make You Like Me)," he plays it comparatively straight on Georgia Hard, confirming that he's a consummate country craftsman in the process. Amid the generous selection of 15 songs, highlights range from the countrypolitan, string-laden "Leave It to a Loser," on which Fulks channels the soulful sophistication of the late Charlie Rich, to the dance-floor buoyancy of "Each Night I Cry," which sounds closer to Rodney Crowell. A pair of murder ballads, "Coldwater, Tennessee" and "If They Could Only See Me Now," show his mastery of the taut, dark narrative, while fans of his sardonic streak will love "Countrier Than Thou." The musicianship is first-rate throughout, with the instrumental "Right on Redd" showcasing the interplay of guitarist Redd Volkaert with steel guitar legend Lloyd Green. If Nashville decides to return to songs of cheatin', drinkin', and killin', this is an album full of hits just waiting to happen. --Don McLeese

Rating: - Not an original lick on the whole disc
I bought this album based on a glowing review that I read which stated that this album belonged in the TOP 50 Country Albums of all time. It's not the album is bad - it's not. It's just the album is so derivative of so many other artists. Who is Robbie Fulks other than someone who can mimic George Jones, or Rodney Crowell or even Jo Stafford? It's one thing to be influenced by other artists but to sound like 15 different country stars on one album is just a bit much. And the little novelty ditty ... Read More
Rating: - Best Robbie Fulks yet
Just when I thought Robbie Fulks couldn't get any better, he did.
Robbie Fulks has nowhere near the level of fame and critical acclaim he deserves. Like Kristofferson once said about Billy Joe Shaver - "If life were a TV show, he'd come on at 4 am. I'd like to get him a better time slot." Robbie Fulks deserves prime time broadcast programming but he's on late night cable instead.
I can't figure out why "Georgia Hard" isn't the #1 song on country radio, or alt-country or Americana ... Read More
Rating: - Best Country Artist Since Hank Sr.
This is not hyperbole. Robbie Fulks grabbed me with his early (mid-nineties) work, in which he channeled Hank and honky-tonk greats like Ray Price and Buck Owens. But he's no mere imitator, even though imitations of old-time country would still be better than anything on the radio today. For instance, the new Lee Ann Womack is a lovely throwback LP, but it does not break any new ground. Fulks, in his country efforts (Country Love Songs, South Mouth, 13 Hillbilly Giants) has somehow managed to cover that familiar ... Read More
Rating: - Something for all tastes
Wonderful songwriter, clever lyrics, great music. A must-buy. You will not regret having this in your collection.
Rating: - Best Robbie Fulks since South Mouth
Robbie Fulks' song writing is absolutely brilliant. I agree with those who say that when Fulks dies his brain should be examined by experts. He lost me with a couple of his recent CDs, but this not this one. I would have given five stars, but I just don't like the track "I'm Gonna Take You Home (And Make You Like Me)". What the heck, I'll just skip it and shut up now. Another Robbie Fulks CD I recommend is "South Mouth".
