Editorial Review: Whether you're on the road or stopping off at a wi-fi coffee shop, work more productively with the Toshiba Satellite A75-S213 notebook PC. It features a brilliant 15.4-inch TruBrite screen and SRS TruSurround XT virtual surround sound capability--perfect for your multimedia presentation or a cinema-like experience when watching DVD movies. It also features a hyper-threaded Mobile Pentium 4 processor, 100 GB hard drive, 1 GB of installed RAM (1.5 GB maximum), dual-layer, multi-format DVD burner, integrated 54g wireless connectivity with support for Atheros SuperG technology, and Windows XP Home edition. The Basics - Hard Drive: The 100 GB hard drive (5400 RPM) is a above average in size for notebook PCs, and its capacity is a welcome size for such a multimedia-centric notebook.
- Processor: This notebook is powered by the 3.33 GHz, hyper-threaded Intel Mobile Pentium 4 processor 548 which rests close to the top of its class in terms of speed (as of June 2005). It provides near-desktop PC performance for your notebook and helps to conserve battery life. It has a 533 MHz front-side bus and 1 MB L2 cache. (An L2, or secondary, cache temporarily stores data; and a larger L2 cache can help speed up your system's performance.)
A hyper-threading processor helps a PC to run multiple demanding applications at the same time. This technology enables the processor to execute two threads (a part of a program) in parallel, boosting performance during key high-drain procedures. This results in more efficient software performance (such as faster reaction times in gaming applications) and enhanced multitasking. - Memory: The installed 1024 MB of RAM (2 x 256 MB, PC2700, 333 MHz DDR SDRAM) will help you power through multimedia presentation and heavy-duty spreadsheets. It has 512 MB of onboard memory with just one available memory slot, occupied with a 512 MB module. You can upgrade this machine to a maximum of 1.5 GB (1 x 512 MB, 1 x 1024 MB).
- CD/DVD Drive: The double-layer DVD drive is compatible with a wide range of formats, including both DVD+RW and DVD-RW discs, CD-RW discs, and dual-layer DVD+R discs, which can hold up to 8.5 GB of data--great for backing up your MP3 collection. It features the following speeds: 2.4x DVD+R-DL, 8x/4x for both DVD+R/RW and DVD-R/RW, and 24x/10x for CD-R/RW.
- Keyboard & Mouse: This notebook has a standard 86-key keyboard and electro-static two-button touchpad. It also provides CD control buttons (play, stop, skip backward, skip forward).
Screen, Graphics and Sound The A75-S213 has a 15.4-inch XGA display w with a resolution of 1280 x 800 pixels. It also provides TruBrite technology, which makes images brighter and more vivid thanks to its anti-glare feature. Video and graphics are powered by the ATI Mobility Radeon 9000 IGP card, which delivers strong 3D rendering and shares 128 MB of memory with the processor's RAM memory. The integrated audio card (Realtek ALC250) provides 16-bit stereo sound via the built-in stereo speakers as well as SRS TruSurround XT virtual surround sound. Connectivity and Expansion Slots The A75-S213 has an integrated Atheros 802.11b/g wireless-LAN that supports Atheros SuperG technology, which uses packet-bursting, fast frames, on-the-fly data compression/decompression, and dual-channel bonding to enhance throughput to double that of 802.11g. You get a good offering of connectivity options, including both super-fast USB 2.0 and Firewire options: - 3 USB 2.0 ports for connecting a wide range of peripherals--from digital cameras to MP3 players
- 1 FireWire (also known as IEEE 1394 or i.Link) port for connecting digital video camcorders and other peripherals
- 1 parallel port for connecting older printers and scanners
- 1 VGA monitor port
- 1 S-Video out
- 1 PCMCIA (or PC Card) slot (Type I/II, 32-bit)

It also has an integrated 56K modem (V.90) and an RJ-45 LAN network port (for a 10/100 Fast Ethernet connection to networks and DSL/cable modems). It also comes preloaded with Microsoft Works, Microsoft Office OneNote, ArcSoft ShowBiz DVD Version 1.3, and Sonic Solutions RecordNow! Basic. Rating: - Terrible computer, DO NOT BUY!
This is the worst laptop I've ever owned. I've had it for about a year, and right from the beginning it overheats constantly, and shuts off, causing me to lose whatever I was working on. At least before, if I kept it ventilated enough, I had a chance of getting through my work before it overheated. Now (a year later) it overheats with no warning, and soon after I turn it on.
I found that it overheats faster if it's plugged in, so now I can only use it on battery power, and the battery ... Read More
Rating: - I would recommend you buy this laptop..... If I hated you.
The Pros:
- It overheats so often that in harsh winters it can double as a second heater.
The Cons:
- It overheats so often. Period.
Okay, imagine buying a car that has an engine that produces 330 horsepower, but if you use over 150 of it, the car overheats and dies. That's pretty much this laptop. Granted, I've had it for almost three years and it's been through some pretty extreme temperatures. About 90 degrees F / 31 degrees C in the summer and 28F / -5C in ... Read More
Rating: - Hot and heavy and supposedly portable

* Pretty blue case
Cons:
* Runs hot / overheats
* Air vents / fans are on the bottom
* Heavy
* No firewire port
* Seems to have an electrical short somewhere
* Sound could be louder
* Lousy battery life
I've had this computer for about three years. I'll try to be fair. When I bought it, I may not have really known what I wanted. That's not the computer's fault. The display is beautiful ... Read More

I had this lemon for about 2 years. I bought an extended warranty initially, that's why I was stuck with it for 2 years. Prior to this, I'd read some good reviews on Toshiba laptops hence the purchase ...
Things went downhill for me within the 1st year ... overheating (sometimes within an hour of cold bootup, despite external cooling with fans and propped up heatsinks etc.) causes the computer to shut down all the time, until it finally gave up. I sent this back to Fry's for repairs 4 times, ... Read More
Rating: - Awesome desktop replacement
I picked up a Toshiba Satellite A75 with a 3.2 Pentium 4, 256 megs of RAM, 15 inch monitor, 20 gig harddrive, DVD writer, ATI graphics card and Wifi card. Previously I had an HP Pavilion, which died for no apparent reason while editing photos. The Toshiba, while low on RAM, performs beautifully, be it watching DVDs, roaming for a free hotspot, using the word processor, video editing, or even travelling on the road. The battery drains pretty quick due to the heavy processor, and it overheats if you leave it ... Read More
