Editorial Review: You don't have to take out a second mortgage to enjoy the brilliant colors and vibrant realism of high-definition television, thanks to this 30-inch Samsung TXS3082WH CRT HDTV. At just 16.3 inches deep, it's 30 percent slimmer than a conventional CRT TV. It's also a great choice for smaller home theater cabinets, thanks to the bottom mounted speakers which shave 5 inches off the total width. The silver and black bezel provides an elegant and modern look. Samsung's DynaFlat screen increases the viewing angle while minimizing distortion and glare, and the finer pixel dot pitch flat CRT improves picture resolution and brightness. You'll enjoy 480p, 720p and 1080i high-definition viewing right out of the box thanks to the built-in digital ATSC tuner, which pulls HD signals right from the airwaves. You can also connect the set to an optional receiver or cable/satellite set-top box using either the single HDMI or dual component connections. An analog NTSC tuner receives standard-definition (SD) programming. The TXR3080WH is packed to the gills with advanced video and audio features. The 3D Y/C digital comb filter constantly analyzes the three dimensions of picture height, picture width, and picture changes-over-time to dramatically reduce edge image artifacts while improving transition detail. The 3:2 pulldown cinema video processing feature detects and compensates film--which is shot at 24 frames per second (fps) compared with video's 30 fps rate--to video for a smooth theater-like experience at home. The velocity scan modulation function improves black to white image transitions for sharper detail and enhanced picture definition in high brightness operating conditions. It also includes an Invar shadow mask for rendering detailed, high-contrast images free of geometric distortion. A shadow mask is a thin sheet of perforated metal behind the screen that restricts electron flow, each hole in the sheet corresponding to a single pixel. An Invar mask uses an alloy that's especially resistant to the high temperatures generated by the electron beam, allowing a brighter, clearer picture. Choose the mode (standard, dynamic, movie, or custom with adjustable brightness, contrast, sharpness, and color selections) that best suits the program you're watching. You can also select from five screen filling modes--normal, wide, zoom 1, zoom 2, or panorama (which stretches less in the middle and more towards the edge). It has a number of convenience features, including Remote Surf timer (returns TV to original channel so other channels can be browsed during commercial breaks), sleep timer, V-Chip parental controls, auto channel programming, channel labeling, and tri-lingual on-screen displays (English, French, and Spanish). It features two built-in, 10-watt speakers (for 20 watts of total output) and right/left stereo output for connection to a home theater audio system. The Auto Volume Leveler feature keeps audio volume consistent during channel changing to minimize static sound bursts, and it offers four preset sound modes (standard, movie, music, and speech). High-quality virtual surround sound can be experienced with just the speakers built into the sides of the TV. SRS TruSurround XT technology delivers an amazing, simulated 3D effect with clear dialog and powerful bass. Enjoy progressive scan DVD playback or game play using the component video inputs. The full line-up of video and audio connections includes: - Composite AV (RCA): 2 (1 side) in, 1 out
- S-Video: 1 (side) in
- Component Video: 2 in
- HDMI: 2 in
- RF: 2 in
Tech Talk HDMI is a lossless, uncompressed, all-digital audio/video interface to link any audio/video source (such as a set-top box, DVD player, or AV receiver) with your TV--all over a single cable. It provides up to a 5 GB per second bandwidth for transmitting pure digital video and audio signals with no degradation in the transfer. It can carry up to eight discrete audio channels, making it compatible with 7.1-channel surround sound systems. Signals are encrypted with HDCP (High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection) to prevent recording. HDMI is fully backward-compatible with most DVI connections . Component video (also called Y/Pb/Pr) features a three-jack video input, which provides separate connections for luminance (Y), blue color difference (PB) and red color difference (PR). This results in increased bandwidth for color information, resulting in a more accurate picture with clearer color reproduction and less bleeding than you would get with S-Video or composite (RCA yellow video plug) connections. You will need a separate RCA left/right audio cable for sound. High Definition Formats: The most common high-def (HD) video format is 720p, which displays video at 720 vertical by 1280 horizontal pixels. The "p" denotes that it is progressive scan, meaning that all video lines are filled at the same time. The 1080i format displays video at 1080 vertical by 1920 horizontal pixels, and the "i" means that it is interlaced (the old-school way of presenting video where the screen scans the odd-numbered video lines first, then the even-numbered lines). The 1080p format has the same pixel resolution as 1080i, but it is a progressive scan format and thus has a constant vertical resolution of 1080 lines. TruSurround XT audio adds three new audio enhancement technologies to produce an amazingly immersive sound experience. - Dialog Clarity brings movie dialog into ÒfocusÓ during the playback of any surround-encoded material to make speech much clearer and crisper.
- TruBass creates incredible deep rich bass allowing a person to perceive significantly deeper, richer low bass tones that are far beyond the physical low frequency capabilities of the speaker itself.
- The SRS WOW feature widens the soundstage by processing standard two-channel stereo material as well as multi-channel encoded material for a dramatic improvement in the playback of any stereo audio over a two-speaker system.

Rating: - A huge pain! Run far away from this TV...
Approximately 1 year after purchasing my Samsung set, it began to randomly turn itself off, then back on again. The problem progressively got worse, until one day it went completely out. I took it to my local Samsung repair shop. After 2 attempts they were able to temporarily fix it. The set worked for about 1 month, then started the old problem again. I can usually watch about 1 hour worth of TV before it starts turning its on and off. It will eventually develop an 8 sec off/on pattern which makes ... Read More
Rating: - Sam junk
I purchased a 3079 TV in September 2005 because I liked the design and picture quality. Except for weighing a ton, I was satisfied until approximately six months ago.
In April 2007, I turned the set on and something happened inside and the power was gone. I knew it was just out of warranty, so I took it to a local TV repair shop. He fixed it. Approximately one month later, the same problem occured. I took it back to the same shop and he fixed it again, stating the problem with the ... Read More
Rating: - Do Not Buy This TV
I bought the TXS3082WH model, I guess a previous model of this one, in May 2006. A friend had just bought one and it looked great, so I went out and got one too. Not too long after I purchased my set, my friends TV started acting up, same old stuff everyone else complains of, weird geometry, focus problems, etc.. Finally after 3 repair attempts and 2 replacements Samsung took back the TV and gave him credit towards an LCD.
Now 11 months into my purchase, my set has totally died. I first noticed ... Read More
Rating: - Geometry issues and rainbows
Like other reviewers, I thought this TV was great when I purchased it in December 05. It was new to the market, slim, good image, and affordable for an HDTV.
Six months later, I started to notice some bowing of the screen and a rainbow appearing in high contrast areas (I lucked out with no strobing). I've had it looked at three times. First time, they thought it needed degaussing, which didn't do a thing. Tech modified some numbers in the factory menu, and that seemed to fix it. Then I ... Read More
Rating: - Good HDTV for cramped spaces, but audio output shuts off
We got this HDTV as a replacement to fit in our cabinet: 32"x23.5". It fits perfectly, with not an inch to spare!
This is a good solid HDTV, that does all the things you'd expect: 16x9 widescreen display, ATSC (HDTV over-the-air) tuner, HDMI and VGA connectors. There's two component connections. There's three S-Video and/or composite connections, but only two are really usable: the third is buried off to the side and almost unusable (a very poor placement). In addition, it has two cable ...
