Editorial Review: Store hours upon hours of entertainment in Sony's DVP-NC85H/B five-disc carousel changer. This versatile unit plays DVDs and a variety of older disc formats, such as VCD and SVCD, as well as your favorite music CDs. And since the unit supports HDMI connections, you're sure to get the best picture possible. HDMI Compatible High-Definition Multi-media Interface (HDMI) is an interface format that provides uncompressed digital audio and video directly to a digital television. It represents the current state of the art in high-definition video and sound because the information never has to be converted into an analog format. Another benefit of HDMI is that it puts all that information into one cable and one easy-to-use connector. An added benefit of connecting the DVP-NC85H/B to your set with HDMI is that the unit can "upscale" commercial DVDs, which are rendered at 480p resolution, to a digitally interpolated 720p resolution, which makes for a much sharper picture. For analog sets, the DVP-NC85H/B includes a 108 MHz 12-bit digital-to-analog converter for sharp picture and clear action. It features composite, S-video and component video connectors, as well as optical digital, coaxial digital, and RCA analog audio outputs. Precision Cinema Progressive While other DVD players detect image changes at the scan line level, Sony's Precision Cinema Progressive (PCP) system detects them at the pixel level. This makes the picture more faithful to the source--whether film or video--because the technology uses separate, optimized algorithms to handle the differing pixel behavior. It also uses separate algorithms to process the moving and still parts of an image, resulting in sharp backgrounds with moving objects that are virtually free from motion artifacts. Precision Drive 3 System Sony's DVP-NC85H/B delivers excellent picture and sound quality--even from damaged discs. How? The unit's Precision Drive 3 system allows you to playback some DVDs that may have been damaged or warped without a degradation of picture quality. This feature comes in handy when watching rentals or other heavily used discs. MP3 and JPEG File Playback The DVP-NC85H/B plays MP3 sound files and JPEG photo files. Simply insert the disc and use the remote control to navigate through your folders to your files.
The DVP-NC85H five-disc DVD player offers 720p/1080i upscaling through an HDMI connection (High Definition Multi Media Interface). HDMI allows the transfer of uncompressed digital audio and video signals to other HDMI equipped components, providing an uncompromised picture. It also features Precision Cinema Progressive technology, which delivers accurate and vivid images to the television. Unlike other DVD players that detect image changes at the Scan line level-Sony's Precision Cinema Progressive (PCP) system detects them at the Pixel level. This results in images closer to the original source data, because separate, optimized algorithms are used to handle the differing Pixel behavior. Precision Drive III mechanism is also included, which helps maximize the performance of DVD collections by reading data even on some physically "warped" discs. Other benefits include a 12bit/108MHz video DAC (digital to analog converter), and 24 bit/192KHz audio, providing high-quality video and audio processing for vivid images and crystal clear sound.

Rating: - Great Features, But a Few Things I Don't Like...
I have had this unit for just about two months now. Video is fine from the DVDs. I am not quite the A/V connoisseur as some reviewers are - I'm significantly less discriminating. But it looks as good to me as any I have seen. I don't generally use it for anything else - just watching DVDs, though it does claim to play a lot of other types of disk. The things that I dislike about this DVD player are as follows:
1) The unit is extremely slow. Powering on, and especially when starting any ... Read More
Rating: - Great all around player for Audio and Video
I bought this player for two reasons. If you enjoy music, having to constantly feed a CD tray becomes a little irritating. Don't overlook the convenience of a multi-disk player. Just load it up and it plays for hours. I also wanted a player that would upsample standard DVDs to my 1080p television. This feature works flawlessly. On most movies from 8-10 feet away it is hard to tell the difference from the output of my Sony Blu-Ray player I bought afterwards (I hate to admit this, but it's true). I've ... Read More
Rating: - No multi disc shuffle
I bought this player to replace my old 5 cd carousel changer. For me it was a bonus feature to have DVD playback. Sony's priority is the DVD playback, not CDs. My favorite function on my old component was the "all disc shuffle" function, which was also a button on the component (no TV needed for the display). This one can only shuffle within one disc, but I don't see the point in that. I also don't like where the remote sensor is because I have to leave the door open to my entertainment center to ... Rating: - Poor quality and poor repair experience
I bought this as part of a home theater system. I'm not an audiophile and don't watch TV, just a movie or two each week. I like the 5 disc carousel because it allows me to play about a week's worth of Christmas music from MP3s burned to discs. My old CD carousel won't do MP3s.
The remote didn't work out of the box. Many functions are only available on the remote, so this isn't exactly a minor problem. I sent it back immediately.
In return for my brand new DVD player, Sony ... Read More
Rating: - Nice, But Missing Something
This is a good product, but being that i am a old school Sony product user the one feature that i really miss on their new dvd/cd players is RANDOM PLAY MODE come on, would it have cost Sony a whole lot of money to include this feature on this latest dvd/cd players 5 dics models instead i had to buy the 300 Mega Storage model to get this feature, but what about those of us who still like the 5 disc carousel model with random play? have we been kicked to the curb.? I mean come on a player without random ... Read More
